Or any book you didn't care for that was made into a great movie??

Breakfast at Tiffany's - loved the movie, didn't care for the book
I didn't like any of the movie adaptations of John Irving's novels - esp "the Hotel New Hampshire
Don't get me started on that 80's movie version of "Lord of the Flies" it was beyond terrible...

Ender's Game. I really wish they would have tried harder with this one. I'm not a huge fan of remakes, but I'm all in favor of one in this case.

Ummm, I had a whole thread earlier about this book/movie. It's what prompted my starting this thread.

Ender's Game - Good book, fricking awful movie.

Timeline - Amazing book, fricking awful movie.

Point of Impact - Turned into the Wahlberg movie Shooter. Great book, mediocre movie.

The DaVinci Code - Pretty decent book, terrible movie.

Children of Men - Alright book, really good movie.

Starship Troopers - Amazing book, a movie that is only good if you've never read the book. I really liked it initially, but it is such a mockery of great source material.

Enders Game

Eragon - not a great book but what it lacked in greatness the movie more than made up with awfulness.

Good call on the posters that said Ender's Game. I know movies naturally condense some of the details in the books.. but good grief, watching the movie was like trying to read the book in fast forward or something.

Honestly, I don't think this can be done. There's so much subtleness and thought in the book; you're going to lose a lot by acting it out. The revelation at the end, it just can't be done convincingly in a live setting.

Also, A Princess of Mars/John Carter. The novel was pulp fantasy, and to do it justice, it should have been a hard R along the lines of Conan.

That movie was painfully bad to watch. The only movie that was tougher to watch was The Last Airbender.

Good one. They also ruined The Deathly Hallows.

Really, pretty much every movie they have made from Michael Crichton's books have been disappointing, outside of Jurassic Park. Jurassic Park is a great movie, but it isn't close to the book.

I didn't watch the 2nd and 3rd movies. The first one was bad.

For years I had a "if I read the book, not gonna see the movie" policy. "the Beach" w Leo DeCaprio was the last straw. I caved and watched "shutter Island" recently. I was surprised at what a good job they did - granted, they had to cut a few things out, it was a long book; but the film makers managed to not screw up the plot or central themes.

So I let my guard down and watched "Less than Zero" this weekend (probably wouldn't have were RDJ not starring) and was dumbfounded as to how irrelevant the book was to the movie. I don't know why they even bothered claiming it was based on the novel. Oh well, that's my rant. Going to re-read the book - it's been 20 years since I read it, maybe I'm missing something...

I understand that certain aspects of books need to be removed for movies, but what really gets me is when they completely disregard the central themes of the book.

Starship Troopers is a good one. Heinlein would've killed the writer and director if he would've been alive for that movie.
