New guidelines aim to prevent another 'Martian' in the comedy category

quote:

The HFPA’s new guidelines for awards consideration include modifications to the animated feature and foreign film categories in addition to tweaked genre classifications, particularly in distinguishing between comedies and dramas. In order to be nominated as a musical, a submitted film must be a “comedy or drama in which songs are used in addition to spoken dialogue to further the plot.” And to prevent a film like The Martian appearing in the same category as a film like Spy, the Globes have set forth a new rule in which “dramas with comedic overtones should be entered as dramas,” not comedies.

Is it really necessary to implement some sort of protocol to ensure that films of certain genres are not mislabeled? You could just watch the damn movie and figure things out.

They didn't, or someone just wanted to see the Martian face easier competition?

Exactly. I believe the studio got the option of which genre they wanted to enter under and chose comedy. The issue was that there weren't stricter rules under which they could be told "no, it's clearly a drama".

SO did anyone who actually watched The Martian walk out of the theater thinking they just saw a comedy?

Yes it had some light moments, but comedy?

I think that the Golden Globes intent was to allow a ton of room in the nomination process so that they could have as many great movies in the running as possible.

You're going to have more great dramas each year than you'll have great musicals or comedies. And comedies are usually just smaller and less impressive films.

But it got out of hand and you ended up with The Martian and American Hustle winning for Musical/Comedy and movies like Spy and Trainwreck not having a chance.
