I think the 3 serious contenders are Bob Hope, Billy Crystal and Johnny Carson.

Obviously, Hope has so many appearances 19 out of 88 - and at the time of his last duties as host, he had presided over roughly 40% of all Oscar ceremonies. Bob Hope is probably the presumptive choice here, as he is a strong candidate for GOAT variety performer.

Crystal is an intriguing choice, and he has the second most appearances to Hope. A good all around entertainer, but really not in the same league as Hope and Carson. However, Crystal really threw himself into it, while Hope and Carson just did their thing (which wasn't bad - 2 of the best there ever were at it).

So, who you got?

Everyone old enough to remember says Bob Hope, but I grew up watching Billy Crystal and those clips where he put himself inside the movies nominated for Best Picture.

Crystal is my pick for numero uno.

I grew up with Crystal, so I've only seen clips of Hope and Carson.

I still think Crystal was more entertaining.

Even as a kid I was excited for Billy Crystal to host.

Carson ran a tight ship and ended the show on time.

Plus he could deliver a joke better than anyone.

So we're just going to ignore the zombie performance sleep art of Franco? The uncomfortable silence of the Letterman year? From the position of ignorance Billy Crystal was the best I've actually watched. Whoopi Goldberg was actually pretty solid as well the time I watched her.

It would be interesting to watch a complete Carson or Hope performance but I wonder if they wouldn't feel pretty dated? Humor at the Oscars often feels more topical than universal. I'm not even sure a Crystal Oscars from more than ten years ago would seem as good today.

This is probably why Hope and Carson were the giants here - they were masters of that. And we have 3 to 5 decades to review those guys doing that.
