The Ascent- Larisa Shepitko
Two Soviet soldiers leave their starving unit to search a nearby farm for supplies. When they see the Germans have reached it first, they have to retreat deep into enemy territory.
Wings- Larisa Shepitko
A former pilot used to military ideas of service and obedience cannot adjust to life in peacetime.

Ong Bak is a modern classic martial arts film. Its easily one of the best of this century, along with Ip Man.

I loved this movie. Haven't seen it in a while.
That's the one that stuck with me the most from the films I listed. I definitely need to check out some more Wong Kar-Wai films, 2046 is the only other film of his I've seen.

Strongly disagree with Ong-Bak. Not entertaining at all IMO.
I loved Ip Man though.

Ong Bak is an entertaining flick.
It's a low budget, foreign film so given that baseline, it was very well done.

I have Elle sitting in my queue. Haven't watched it yet, but it's close to next up. I guess my last foreign films were a rewatch of Seven Samurai (still great) and Force Majeure (very good).
Oh, I take that back. I finished up The Past, which is another datapoint in the argument that Farhadi is the world's greatest working director. He made a beautiful film in a language he doesn't even speak (he's Iranian, the film is set in Paris). Great, great movie.

Also re-watched Waking Ned Devine recently. It's in English but technically foreign. One of my favorite movies.

Yup, The Man from Nowhere is legit.

Tons of great Korean movies on Netflix lately. I watched Man From Nowhere a while back and ended up watching most of the ones I could find there.

"The Bicycle Thief" (1948; Italian)
"Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead" (2014; Iceland-Norway)
Those two don't often show up on the same lists.
