By all means @Marvel is still firing on all cylinders - was fun to geek out to Avengers: Age of Ultron - a highly entertaining follow-up!

quote:

Kevin P. Sullivan @KPSull Follow Whedon stuffs Avengers Age of Ultron with an impossible amount of great geekiness. Sometimes it feels like too much, but he pulls it off!

quote:

Mike Sampson @mjsamps Follow Avengers 2 is both an amazing sequel and a fantastic setup for the rest of the MCU. So nerdy in the best possible way. 5:37 PM - 9 Apr 2015

some negatives

quote:

David Ketchum @KetchumAtMovies Follow AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON: Way, WAY, way too many characters & way too much going on. Marvel's answer for Spidey 3? i may have had a seizure.. 6:30 PM - 9 Apr 2015

quote:

Peter Sciretta ? @slashfilm Follow Avengers: Age Of Ultron is bigger, more complex, darker, more action packed than the first film, but ultimately not as much fun.

quote:

@benpears Follow AGE OF ULTRON: Liked, didn't love. A lot more bleak than the first. Excellent banter, great action, SO MUCH HAPPENING.

None of the negative reviews are all that bad.

This makes me excited.

Yeah, I'd say Ultron himself is by far the most fricked up of all the mainstream Marvel villains. It's also the second film in a trilogy, so that means it needs to be darker than the first. I'm not expecting to be as fun as the first (don't expect to see Hulk picking up Ultron and tossing him around like a rag doll), but I don't think it needs to be. shite needs to hit the fan in this movie, and I don't think it should have a happy ending and end on somewhat of a down note.

Red flag for me. I'm still going to see it (probably), as Whedon still has my trust, but I don't think it needed:

quote:

bigger, more complex, darker,

or

quote:

more action packed

Heck, I thought they packed too much into the first film. As it is, now, go to one of these movies and it is just sensory overload because they extend the action sequences for too long. Break them up, change them up, use them to progress the story.

The more "action packed" it is, the less time and effort to the story. But, I guess story is barely a tertiary concern in these films.

Anyway, I shite on everything, but I did watch and enjoy the first movie - will watch the second one. If I'm underwhelmed, I'll just pass on future installments. I haven't seen any of the individual hero films, except Iron Man and parts of Iron Man 2.

that can mean more convoluted

I'm confused though, why do they keep calling the avengers "geek"...they're super heroes. Super heroes aren't geeky.

Then you're kind of missing out when Marvel keeps it more low-key, but still fun. Specifically Winter Soldier and Thor.

Marvel does a great job of creating a live-action comic book / Saturday morning cartoon experience. It's nearly impossible to not enjoy its movie experience, but I wouldn't focus too much on the plot, themes, writing, etc.

If you're going with Ultron as the antagonist, you definitely have to do the former. Ultron is more than just a genocidal robot. He's a heavily mentally disturbed individual with one hell of an identity crisis. He's got an incredibly disturbing worldview that's quite a bit more complicated then say Brainiac. One of the main reasons Whedon jumped at the chance to do the Avengers is to bring Ultron to the big screen.

I'd watch Winter Soldier before going into the theater, since I think that one will feature most heavily into this.

Then I've done the impossible. I didn't enjoy X2. I didn't enjoy the Spiderman films (I know, not Marvel films) - I didn't enjoy what I saw of "The Wolverine". I didn't enjoy what I saw of the second FF film (and the first one barely registered a "Meh").

I was just about ready to watch Thor (Branaugh is a legitimate filmmaker AND classically trained actor, after all) - but decided life is too short to be pissed off about movies - ALL the time.

I did give the first Avengers film a chance and loved it. I watched Man of Steel (I'm a Superman guy), and liked it - didn't love it, liked it. The first X-Men was a little better than okay. It's ruined by the sequels.

Other than that I have been underwhelmed or less by the modern take on comic book movies. (Watchmen is in a different category, IMHO).

ETA: Winter Soldier has almost universal acclaim, but so does that terrible, terrible 2009 J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie.

And I guess I need to go back - I watched both Hulk films (Bana and Norton) and true to form, enjoyed them better than the average comic book movie-goer. I watched Daredevil specifically for Silent Bob's cameo (long story). That movie was terrible.

But, not sure about all the Fox versus Marvel films distinctions. I specifically haven't watched ALL of IM2 or 3, any gay "Wolverine" film (NTTAWWT), Thor, Cap, Hawkeye, Red Witch, or whatever else they have of the current generation of hero films.

They just consistently disappoint me.

I enjoyed both of these as well. I think the Bana film is excellent in its own cool way and Norton's Hulk should not be so forgotten.

While the theatrical release is bad, laughably bad even, the Director's Cut is actually quite good.

same for me, although I really liked the last two (CA winter soldier and GOTG) Before that I thought they were just a bunch of overrated films. And before anyone jumps on me, I feel the same about the batman films as well. I loved BB, but the next two were nothing special for me.

Bana

I thought the scene where he described the rage and how he felt as the hulk and his heart pounding and remembering what he did to the Hulk "dogs" - that is some of the best acting in any comic book film ever.

This guy also said Days of Future Past was a disaster, and that Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the worst movies he watched that year.

just the last vestiges of mainstream calling comics and video games geeky even though they now either prop up or out earn Hollywood.

Couldn't help but think of this:

Gibert: I just wanted to say that I'm a nerd, and I'm here tonight to stand up for the rights of other nerds. I mean uh, all our lives we've been laughed at and made to feel inferior. And tonight, those bastards, they trashed our house. Why? Cause we're smart? Cause we look different? Well, we're not. I'm a nerd, and uh, I'm pretty proud of it.

Lewis: Hi, Gilbert. I'm a nerd too. I just found that out tonight. We have news for the beautiful people. There's a lot more of us than there are of you. I know there's alumni here tonight. When you went to Adams you might've been called a spazz, or a dork, or a geek. Any of you that have ever felt stepped on, left out, picked on, put down, whether you think you're a nerd or not, why don't you just come down here and join us. Okay? Come on.

Gibert: Just join us cos uh, no-one's gonna really be free until nerd persecution ends.

Good. The first film was too much "fun." It's about time Marvel introduces a serious villain that actually poses a legitimate threat. Loki was a very fun villain, but neither he nor his army ever posed an actual threat to the Avengers.

The one weakness in all of the Marvel films has been its villains. Ultron looks like he'll be the first villain that makes you think, "Ugh...yeah, I don't want to frick with that guy."
