So I'm firing up Episode 8 right now, at work and don't care I'm finishing this bitch, and it as good as everyone has told me over the years. I have two issues with it though. First, I don't feel like we get enough character development to the point of I know who the hell everybody is. Also, I find myself asking who is still alive. They just captured Foy and I'm not sure on a couple of soldiers. Jurassic Park kid and the mexican looking replacement that came over with Professor X. Everybody is starting to somewhat blend together and 75% of the original episode just died or got their leg blown off.
Absolute great show though and I love the pre-episode interviews with the vets. Oh and Ronald Speirs was a freaking lunatic in the best way. Winters was a tactical genius and born leader. I want to search on all these guys to see what was true, but I don't want to spoil the ending of the series.

Do yourself a favor and read Ambrose's book. It's a great companion to a wonderful series.
And yes I know the book was written first. I read the book first before watching the series.

I echo this - it definitely helps to sort out who did what. I probably watched the first episode, then read the book, THEN watched the whole thing.

I was fortunate to exchange a few letters several years ago with Wild Bill. Everytime I wrote him, he wrote me back. I told him I was from Lafayette, La and he said Doc Roe was from this area. He said Doc was the greatest man he ever knew. Oh, and I still have the letters. Last time I checked, I think only Mularkey was still alive from the original group.

Damnit! Didn't realize and I always try to read before getting into a series. Guessing it would have helped with the names Game of Thrones I can remember every house and the first 3 sons. Band of Brothers I get Professor X, Ghost Soldier(just read he was Spiers), Popeye, Mexican Mole, Jurassic Park kid, Bad guy from Walking Tall, angry New Yorker, funny Philly, and Peter from Office Space. Winters and Sobel were the two that I got early on and remembered.

I agree with this the first time I watched it. I've now watched it 3 times and it definitely becomes easier to follow the development of all the characters.

Its not like youre worried about spoilers when you read the book. We win.
The series benefits from rewatching. I watch it about once a year. The book fills in a lot of gaps in the show, and expounds on many great topics. I mean, you could've made a 30 episode show if you wanted to. I thought the pace and storytelling was excellent. Your statement in the OP, about how you had a hard time keeping up with the new guys, kinda reflects the tone. The episode "replacements" deals with this, all the casualty rates Easy was experiencing and the battle hardened group that made it through Normandy had a hard time including new guys.
Best part is, the account in the book of Spiers running through the German lines is identical to the account in the show. Thats not Hollywood, he really did that shite. That scene where Spiers takes command during the assault on Foy is one of my favorite moments from the series.

Yeah I was off. I remembered he was in one of them and the actor who played Babe kind of looks like him.

All true...taken from interviews with the survivors when Ambrose wrote the book.

Very good point and it was just added to by the fact that I just realized Fassbender was in this. Blew my mind when I read that he was in 7 episodes. Every one not a mental case or ranking officer are one in the same when they are fighting in the trenches.

Absolutely insane when you realize this really happened. It is the part of a movie where you say like he wouldn't have gotten shot in the face and this dude just trucks thorugh it like he's running back a touchdown. Amazing some people have this in them.

It's an incredible series (my #2 all time).
Report back after you've finished watching the final episode. I watch the last ten minutes or so of it several times a year at least. It's amazing.
Looks like it's about time for me to watch BoB gain soon...

This is true, definitely not a strong point of the series.

I concur with this as well - it's almost too big and requires multiple watches and reading the bios on each guy to build a connection. Luckily the DVD extras provide some of the background (and there's also the book) if you want to go down that rabbit hole.

Dude is popkern - love the larger-than-life persona and superhero character they made him out to be.

It's funny because I immediately connected with the characters on BoB and had no problem keeping up with everyone, but I did have difficulty, and this is largely due to the focus of the show, following characters my first go with The Pacific. I was initially let down with The Pacific because I felt like it didn't live up to BoB, however I've since watched the series again multiple times and it's gotten better each time.
You may find the same is true for you if you're having trouble following everything the first go-round. These shows get better the more you watch them.

Keep in mind that the original Easy Company didn't know everybody in the company. They might recognize one another by sight, but if you weren't in the same squad or platoon, you probably weren't close friends. Once there were casualties and replacements, you may not know the guy in the next foxhole, and he may get killed before you learned his name. Your buddy might get wounded and you wouldn't know what ultimately happened to him until years later, if ever. So your experience in watching is similar to their experience in that regard.

I cherish the memories of my grandson sitting in my lap...my grandson said 'grandpa, were a hero in the war'?
grandpa said 'no. but I served in a company of heroes'
if that doesn't get you right there....you just ain't human

Last 10 had me choked up. Really enjoyed every second of this. Right into the Pacific
