I thought it was pretty awesome. It wasnt as weird/trippy as I thought it was gonna be.

High speed sex wasn't trippy? Neither was Beethoven and pointless violence?

well yeah it was definitely trippy, but I was expecting it to be just totally out there and rediculous

Nope. It actually has a cohesive and understandable narrative. Great film.

I caught it on TV part of the way through and couldn't figure out what was going on.

The average joe viewer today, is desensitized to violence and sex. I could see younger people wondering what all the fuss is about.

For its time, it was very violent and sexually explicit.

Once you adjust to the language he uses in the movie, it is very understandable. There's nothing about the film that gets you "guessing", but there are details you pick up when you rewatch it.

I saw it for the first time this year, as well, and I had the same opinion. It is probably like TMyth said, we are just desensitized to the violence. And the movie had a well defined plot and point, where as, I thought it was going to be plain ole horrorshow.... you know some of the old ultraviolence.

I've mentioned before, when I saw this at the SLU student union theater in the late 80's, a big part of the crowd walked out after the first 20 minutes.

I think the message has lost a little of it's potency over the years as well.

Personally, I never had any qualms about the fact that his violent nature was artificially suppressed with aversion therapy (a treament for which he volunteered). The "unlucky" happenstance that he had to face his victims after he was altered and defenseless seemed more like karma and "just deserts" rather than a tragic extension of the man's inhumanity to man theme.
