while 4 is good, 3 is better.
We get to see Rocky at his highest as well as lowest after Mick dies. It is where his friendship with Apollo is born and has the best training montage when he learns to fight like "a colored fighter". It gave us Eye of the Tiger! Let's not forget Thunderlips!!!
the only thing wrong with this film is that Clubber Lang is the worst villan (next to Tommy Gunn of course).
although 4 is great as well, i think 3 is the best Rocky.

Each chapter was worse than the previous until Rocky Balboa. While a bunch of plot holes, I have it about as good as Rocky 3, perhaps even a little better and a much nicer way to say goodbye to the series.
I'm willing to watch 1,2,3 and Balboa again, without reservation. 4 and 5 I can live without.

Ill say it.
I don't care for the original. As it has already been pointed out, it is more of a love story than a boxing movie. It moves too slow for me. I don't see how people can say it is the best of the series.
To me it is like all the people who complain about Tron2 when the original Tron was mediocre at best.

It would be a one sided argument. It's most definitely NOT a sports movie.

#1 - The Sandlot. Pretty much defined my childhood, extremely quotable, holds up very well and an all time great soundtrack.
Others:
Baseball - If I can only pick one I'm going Eight Men Out, The Natural, Major League and A League of Their Own.
Football - Honestly this is king of a weak category. Remember the Titans maybe.
Basketball - Hoosiers or Hoop Dreams. Probably Hoop Dreams.
Hockey - MD2 (Haven't seen Miracle)
Golf - Seven Days in Utopia
Boxing - Million Dollar Baby. (my oriiginal amswer...) Cinderella Man. I know a lot of people don't like it and this board hates Rusell Crowe, but it's very redeeming for the main character and that story line gets me. Over the years Raging Bull has become a little overrated IMO. I say that even though I love Scorsese and De Niro. When We Were Kings and Rocky are up there. The Hurricane. Boxing gives baseball a run for its money.
Soccer - Umm
Bowling - Kingpin
Bull Riding - 8 seconds. This category is STAAACKED
Horse Racing - Seabiscuit
Martial Arts - The Karate Kid
Billiards - The Hustler
Noteworthy: The Long Gray Line! Pride of the Yankees, The Stratton Story, The Champ! The Jackie Robinson Story

5 I think everyone can understand. But 4 is the best of the entire series (just my opinion). You're literally the first person I've seen say they could "live without" Rocky 4.
And I thought Rocky Balboa was much better than I thought it would be. The teaser trailer was awesome though.

what about rocky 5. that one was def. better than 4 and 3.

As others has stated, I could watch a 24-hour marathon of major league and be content. Now, 25 years later, its even more interesting when you think how much baseball has changed, and the fact that the Indians have still not won a series.

I don't "dislike" Rocky 4 as a movie, necessarily. Let's just say that there are off-screen reasons involved and just leave it at that. It is much better than 5. If it comes on, I don't recoil in horror and turn it off.

it irks me that Chad Ogea would have likely been series MVP had the Indians held that series vs the Marlins. He had 2 huge W's in that series. He still to this day, hates Craig Counsell.

Goal is a pretty good soccer movie. They made a sequel too, but I haven't seen it.
There is a movie with Elijah Wood that has soccer as the backdrop called Green Street Hooligans or something like that. Also pretty good.

How did Raging Bull not get mentioned until page 3 of this thread? De Niro...Scorsese...Come on people. De Niro's performance was incredible to say the least and Pesci was great too. In a movie where De Niro quotes Marlon Brando's legendary role as a has been boxer in On the Waterfront, he really reminds me of a young Brando. Like Brando, such attention to detail in his portrayal of an outsider, hot tempered, simple minded boxer. Not only the greatest sports movie of all time, the overwhelming majority of critics and top movie list have in the top 20 movies ever made. Probably my favorite movie, sports or no sports.

I'm surprised that Slapshot was only mentioned 3 or 4 times. Especially with all the hockey movies listed.
