Spoilers
So did he have real bullets in the gun at the end? I don't understand what is insinuated.
They say he blew his nose off, but it just looks broken. And he aimed the gun at his temple, not his nose.
And what is insinuated when Emma Stone looks up out the window in the hospital? That he is flying? Is that a metaphor for him being "back" as an A lister?

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
Everyone has their own idea for what happened.
Some think he is already dead in the hospital after blowing his head off.
Some think he died jumping out the window. They think the hospital is his brain firing the last few moments of life. I don't buy it. Why would we see things from his daughters perspective if this is true.
Some think he actually was able to fly at the end after finally getting the critical acclaim he sought.
The daughter didn't react when she looked down, but smiled when looking up. The dead in the street crowd believe she snapped when seeing him dead and she entered the same fantasy life he had so instead of seeing him dead, she saw him flying away.
I don't buy that either because I think there would have been some reaction to seeing him dead below.
I go with he either flew away or jumped to a fire escape and was running up the escape.

This is just my opinion and what I interpret as the ending..
He really did kill himself on stage. No way he just happened to blow his nose off. What he is experiencing in the last scene is his heaven.
He wakes up looking practically healed and even better than before. He then finds out he has, by shooting himself on stage, changed the world of stage acting and regained his lost fame from years past. He also has the love of his daughter back. He then proceeds to fly out the window because, its heaven, he can do that.
That or its all from the perspective of his daughter that has gone insane after he killed himself. He's dead in the hospital room and she is hallucinating, explaining her crazy looking eyes as she stares out the window.
Just my thoughts.

How 'bout he was dead the whole time from his first suicide attempt in the ocean and the play is some form of purgatory...I like that one.
