Seems highly unlikely they can ever make a relationship work long term. The stuff they each said about the other on their pre-erasure tapes were pretty fricken devastating.

The only thing that might give them a chance is that Joel may have come to grips with some of the crap from his childhood that was making him so anal retentive. If he can come clean like that in his actual relationship with her that might give them a slight chance.

But there is no indication that Clementine can somehow quit being such a neurotic mess.

So, while it might be nice to think they'll somehow turn it around, it seems like a really long shot.

The end implies they keep erasing their memories and getting back together

The story isn't really about them. It's how all of us are fricked up and we should just deal with it like adults and not repress everything.

Joel and Clementine are just a vehicle to communicate that to us via the film.

That might apply to Joel. But I don't think Clementine was suppressing much. Although maybe she was trying and it kept coming out as the manic behavior she seemed subject too.

An Eternal Sunshine TV show is in the works.

They actually clarified this in the sequel screenplay that never got picked up, Eternaler Sunshine of the God is Dead.

Not sure why they felt a new Nietzsche quote was necessary for the title. But it probably didn't help with the branding.
