Haven't seen this in probably 10 years and now I'm watching again thinking how good it could've been if it had just been made a few years later with a Fassbender or Hardy in the Jude Law role and a better director at the healm.

It's really an incredible piece of history that not that many in the US are very familiar with. The Nazi's are at the height of their military power and the Russians lost tens of millions soldiers and civilians and you have one of the best snipers in history who is being used as propaganda and a moral booster.

I know they were commie bastards but they really took it on the chin and survived against the Nazi War Machine and were virtually the only ground engagement against Hitler at the time.

The movie overall was ok but it's one of those what could have been. Especially coming out so close Private Ryan, the battle scenes and tension just look inferior.

I agree that something was a touch off with it, but I still think that it was very good. Ed Harris was awesome.

Yeah he was the best part, I thought the movie couldn't make up its mind if it wanted to be a war movie, a romance, a blockbuster, or something else.

I had read the book Enemy at the Gates: The Battle for Stalingrad years before. I thought they did a great job with the film, and still enjoy seeing it when I catch it in reruns.

It is based on a book called War of the Rats, which is a good read as well that I would recommend.

Edit: I should clarify that it is based on several books on the topic (Stalingrad and the sniper, Vasily). I have only read War of the Rats.

It is a weird mix love the Panzer III for example in the movie but then it shoots and looks like a firework not a tank firing. Similar the German Uniforms and stuff look good but some tactics like how they are in front/side of the rubble when the human wave attack happens is off. The Nazi riding the tank and shooting the dead Russians with the MP-40 looks the part so well. The love angle could have died it dragged the movie down. The Russians did use women and they could have had a romance again but frick that love triangle bullshite. Ed Harris was great in his role.

I stand corrected. I read that one too, and you're right about it being the actual fictional history book it was based on.

It was pretty good. I wish there were more sniper movies.

Nikita Khrushchev is awesome in this movie.
