Comic Con also coincides with the release of the Eisner Awards, the awards for the comics industry. Let's take a quick look at the winners/nominees and whether they could spawn future movie/TV properties

Full winners are here: LINK /

Best Continuing Series
Winner: Saga, by Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples (Image)

Nominees:
Astro City, by Kurt Busiek & Brent Anderson (Vertigo)
Bandette, by Paul Tobin & Colleen Coover (Monkeybrain)
Hawkeye, by Matt Fraction, David Aja, & Annie Wu (Marvel)
Southern Bastards, by Jason Aaron & Jason Latour (Image)
The Walking Dead, by Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard, & Stefano Gaudiano (Image/Skybound)

Probably the right call, even if its getting a little old. Yeah, yeah, Saga is the best comic on earth. It'll likely never get adapted because it would require a huge budget, and I don't think anyone would fund it. It would have been nice for Hawkeye to get the win (not to mention a Netflix series like it is begging for), but hardly outrageous.

I haven't read Bandette, so the only non-adapted work that has potential is Southern Bastards, which would be amazing as an FX series. This is also where I ask where the hell is Sex Criminals?

Best New Series
Winner: Lumberjanes, by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Noelle Stevenson, & Brooke A. Allen (BOOM! Box)

Nominees:
The Fade Out, by Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips (Image)
Ms. Marvel, by G. Willow Wilson & Adrian Alphona (Marvel)
Rocket Raccoon, by Skottie Young (Marvel)
The Wicked + The Divine, by Kieron Gillen & Jamie McKelvie (Image)

Of course Lumberjanes won, and it's already been picked up for an adaptation. There's a minor controversy that there is no female writer for the movie, consider the book is written entirely by women and the cast of the book is all-female. It's a great book, and you should read it.

But the big thing is how deep the new series category is. The Fade Out is amazing and almost certainly will be turned into an HBO series or something as its a film noir about old Hollywood.

Ms. Marvel is the most successful new character in maybe a decade, and Marvel has to be scrambling to figure out a way to get Kamala Khan into their films (I'm guessing she will cameo in Inhumans).

Wicked and the Divine is an amazing concept, but it seems to be running out of steam due to the radical decision to kill off its most interesting character. Sure, it set up a murder mystery and it was a shocking moment and all, but the book has suffered from the character's absence. Decisions have consequences, and I don't see how they can walk it back.

Best Writer
Winner: Gene Luen Yang, Avatar: The Last Airbender (Dark Horse); The Shadow Hero (First Second)

Nominees:
Jason Aaron, Original Sin, Thor, Men of Wrath (Marvel); Southern Bastards (Image)
Kelly Sue DeConnick, Captain Marvel (Marvel); Pretty Deadly (Image)
Grant Morrison, The Multiversity (DC); Annihilator (Legendary Comics)
Brian K. Vaughan, Saga (Image); Private Eye (Panel Syndicate)
G. Willow Wilson, Ms. Marvel (Marvel)

Meh. They usually don't give the writer award to someone working just one book, particularly a niche book like Airbender. It clearly won't get adapted because the attempt was terrible, turning the property into something toxic.

Kelly Sue DeConnick is gonna win this thing next year when Bitch Planet is eligible on top of her Captain Marvel work. I like Ms. Marvel, but it's a bit much to dominate Wilson just yet.

Morrison and Vaughn pretty much have their spots on lockdown. Surprised Busiek wasn't nominated as well, but I'm downright shocked Fraction wasn't. Hell, I thought he would win for Sex Criminals and Hawkeye. That's an amazing year.

The big news this year was that DC and Marvel were shout-out for the first time.

I thought Astro City would get it just based on Saga getting a little long in the tooth. Of course I want Hawkeye to win, but it's a long shot.

Not a shocker, Saga is fantastic. I haven't read SB yet, but I hear good things.

The correct answer was Ms. Marvel. Just an awesome book. But admittedly I'm a huge Brubaker nerd and The Fade Out is pretty great.

Fraction not being nominated is a big oversight, he's been better than most lately. Morrison is usually pretty bland for me, but I like Multiversity, from what I've read.

By the way, what do you use to read? I've had a weird mix of borrows from friends, free subscription to apps, a Marvel subscription for a bit, etc.

Do you by TP's on the regular?

I buy trades. I'm not buying individual issues and I just can't read stuff online. I don't like the experience, though I gave it a shot. So about once a month, I go on a binge at my shop, and just buy collections.

Which means I haven't read Bitch Planet, as it isn't in a collection yet. I tend to pick up half old and half new. So, my last trip I picked up the new collections of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run while also getting Batgirl's new trade and 100 Bullets.

I've thought about switching to trades only, but I feel that gets expensive, especially trying to stay up to date....

Yup.

Same about online, that's why I've canceled. Twice. But I feel like I miss everything by sticking to paper.

I buy all my trades on Amazon and make sure they are "used."

While I would love to support my local shop all the time, I was able to buy the last 4 trades of Locke & Key for the same price as one trade at my local shop.

I'm really just behind, not really missing out. Saga has 4 volumes, Sex Criminals has 2, Walking Dead has 4 massive volumes, Ms. Marvel already has 3 volumes out, and so on.

It is more expensive, but I make a good living. It's worth the expense to me, as its one of my few vices/hobbies left. Kids really eat into your free time. I've had The Familar from Danielweski sitting on my dressing for three months. It's hard to tackle that beast and instead just read some comics.

True.

You and me both. Although, I should get to it next month. Should finish my last couple of books on my next trip, then onto catching up on trades and reading the Familiar.
