The point is, when the weather did allow bombing you damn sure would have seen more than one HE-111. It looked like one of those reenactment flights at your weekend air show. And the air combat maneuvering was pretty lame. Did they ever exceed 30 degrees angle of bank? Did any of the pilots ever look like they were physically exerting themselves? ACM is violent, pilots grunting under the strain of 5+Gs, whipping their heads around to check for bogies. These pilots looked like they were bouncing in the pattern in flight school.
And no one answered my earlier question about the bullet holes in the hull. There were the first group of 4 shots ("target practice"), which later started to fill with water as the tide came in. No problem. But then we get more shots about a foot below those first shots AFTER the water is rushing in. (For those in Rio Linda, that means these shots were made below the surface of the water.) Ummmm, what? Either those bullets would have skipped and struck the hull above the water line or, at that angle, not had enough velocity to puncture the metal hull. As soon as I saw that I was throwing the bullshite flag.

Movie was a B plus
Sound was an A plus plus
Scale was missed, it looked like they did not have enough money to create that epic scale of 300000+ people being evacuated.
And not one German was seen the entire movie.
Good but not great.

A guy behind me as we were walking out said "I got to look this up, hollywood always makes up shite. No way 300k soldiers were saved by civilian boats"
I was happy to see the guy was 40 plus and redneck, not 22 and millennial.

I honestly didn't think it was very good. I think I was expecting something different though.
visuallt stunning, but I was surprised at how little dialogue there was. Which did make me feel like I was in the middle of fighting for survival, no talking, just trying to stay alive.
Overall thought it was meh. But definitely worth watching. Truly beautiful cinematography.
Reading through the other posts, scale definitely had something to do with it. Didn't feel like there was that many people there.

I never thought too much about this until I read this but I take it as a positive as it does make the Germans that much more menacing in the film.

Untrue.

Just got out of it.
Thought it was fantastic. The ticking clock tension kept me glued to my seat.

I saw Dunkirk tonight and couldn't have more positive things to say about it. While not as good as SPR and while it's non-linearity and unforgivingly tense score in my view make the movie a bit more about its creators than about the story itself, the sheer level of discomfort I felt throughout had me realizing halfway through that Nolan had really captured the essence of the moment. It took guts making a war movie about a retreat, as the throes of battle would have been so much easier to dramatize, but Nolan was successful in making a retreat as bleak and then as inspiring as he possibly could have. For this particular subject matter, I'm not sure there's anything more I could have asked for. As a WW2 nerd, I went in with ungodly expectations and have to say Dunkirk mostly met them.

The death of the young kid was a headscratcher. He falls and then is dead? Huh? Plus, his whole arc could have been eliminated without losing anything. I'm guessing he was written in to bring attention to (and personalize) the sacrifices the civilians made in the rescue effort. Just thought it was executed pretty clumsily and unbelievably.
The boy's death was less about the boy who died and more about the shellshocked state of Cillian Murphy. When CM asked the son if the boy would be okay (after he'd died) and the son said yes and then looked at his father who nodded with approval (realizing how far gone CM was at that point and appreciating his sacrifice), that was perhaps the most powerful scene of the movie.

I took it as George dying for the cause represented the innocent British citizens under attack by the Germans and maintaining their resolve while facing an uncertain future

There are numerous interviews with decorated WW2 veterans who survived Dunkirk, and were brought to tears by the realism of this movie. It's also documented that cloudy skies and the RAF prevented the Lutwaffe from bombing as often as they'd intended, which would explain why the severity doesn't matchup with other WW2 movies.
This. I read one where one of the veterans said they would send the bombings every 30 minutes pretty much on the dot. But outside of that the time between was pretty quiet and calm

I guess you missed the three German soldiers who took Tom Hardy prisoner just before the end credits.

Someone needs to add Dunkirk to the montage of Tom Hardy acting with something covering his mouth.

It was outstanding. A great depiction of the brutality and nightmare that is war. And didn't have to show a single head shot or dismemberment to get the point across either. Just terrifying and felt very immersive when they were in the hulls of those ships.
Highly recommend. Will go see again when i can find it in 70mm Imax

I thought it was incredibly overrated. The whole movie is just the first 15 minutes on repeat.

I thought this was great. It was an example of how Nolan played with genres in Dunkirk.
The way the Germans were handled was like a monster movie. They were out there and could just drop out of the sky at any moment like Jaws.

According to the living veterans that's what it was like. That was the point of the entire movie. To show what it was like trying to survive in that situation
