How will he be remembered among fans of comedy?

1. A great comic who went good tv actor.

2. A good comic who went good tv actor.

3. A hack who stole Bill Hicks act and ended up being a decent TV actor.

4. A hack who will always be a hack.

3. He will always be remembered for ripping off Hicks who was taken from us far too soon. Hicks is an all time Top 10 Comedian, while Leary just ripped him off. He's a decent actor, but he should have stuck with that.

Also Hicks would have called Leary a sell out for all the crappy movies he's done and the Ford commercials.

Well, if the general public knew who Hicks was... But they don't.

Robin Williams was the biggest joke thief since Milton Berle. No one cares.

That was interesting. I saw another comedian on Norm MacDonald Live say that Leary was completely different in the early years, just doing regular jokes before he adopted the whole a-hole schtick and persona we know him for. I think Hicks is a little overrated, so I'm not sure what Leary stole from him other than smoking during his set.

Robin's trademark was his delivery. I odn't even he knew where a bit was going until he got there.

I think there are similarities but its not as bad as it is stated. Its nowhere near Amy Schumer bad. That trick steals jokes at gunpoint.

3. And I think Bill Hicks is only known to comedy fans, as the general public has never held that thievery against him. and yes, it is blatant. The Jim Fixx is a wholesale theft of nearly an entire routine. He also perverted the point, as Hicks was an angry prophet railing against the system, but he was a Cassandra, not an "a-hole." Leary gave it that edge which was of its era.

However, Leary did star in a pretty great TV show, Rescue Me. As Jon Stewart once told Leary, "It's a show so great I can't believe you're on it."

Leary did largely atone for his comedy sins. He's well-liked by comics as a person as far as I can tell, and he's done a ton of charity work. He was big into firefighter charities even before 9/11 made it cool. He also made The Ref, which was funny as hell. I think there will always be resentment of Leary for what he did to Hicks, but his later career showed that he did have some talent.

My favorite Leary role, by far, is Lono in Suicide Kings. That's one of my favorite characters in any movie, in fact.
