Watching the trailer for Rogue One, I started overthinking this.

Base on the trailer, the original Death Star appears to have been constructed with its parabolic dish being the last thing put in place. The second Death Star was likely under construction at that time, and yet the weapons system appears to heave been completed first with the rest of the structure built around it.

Seems like too great of a disparity in construction plans for a project of this proportion.

Will move to the Construction Board, if necessary.

They dual-awarded the bid. Competitive designs, like Fat Man and Little Boy.

Clearly a change directive, they needed a fully operational battle station.

Now, they should have done some redesign to address the vulnerabilities, but since it wasn't complete maybe they had some exhaust port shields in the final plans.

They wanted to trick the rebels into thinking the Death Star was a sitting duck the second time. Did you even watch Return of the Jedi?

The Death Star plans in Episode 2 make it look like the rest of the station is built around the dish.

Exactly, it was meant to look unfinished to lure out the rebels. I thought that was pretty clear.

I thought it was more of a half-sphere (or 1/3 or 1/4, depends on where you cut it) , not a parabola. Sides aren't steep enough.

The point was to focus all energy into a specific point... seems like a parabola shape would be required to accomplish that goal.

Parabola

half-sphere

I guess it is the same. Cut either of these at the higher latitude (closer to pole, which is where the beam emits) and you get the dish shape in the Death Star.

Although it's not really reflecting anything, so shape shouldn't matter.

First rule in government spending: why build one when you can have two at twice the price? Only, this one can be kept secret. Controlled by Americans, built by the Japanese subcontractors. Who, also, happen to be, recently acquired, wholly-owned subsidiaries...of Hadden industries.

Why do you think Admiral Gial Ackbar, the most renowned Mon Calamari and foremost military leader of the Rebel Alliance, so eloquently yet efficiently expressed his conclusion that they had been lured into a surprise attack under the false pretense of an inoperable Death Star?

I believe his exact words were, "It's a trap!"

All those innocent independent contractors who were killed while trying to make a living when the DS was blown up in ROTJ. Risky job to take.

I blame Ben Kenobi for radicalizing a young poor farmer from Tatooine.

My friend here's trying to convince me that any independent contractors who were working on the uncompleted Death Star were innocent victims when it was destroyed by the Rebels.

A similar claim is actually made in the Star Wars novel Bloodline, where a rival senator says that while the rebellion was right to oppose the Emperor, this opposition didn't condone the rebels terrorist tactics.

In response to Senator/Princess Leia inquiring, "Terrorist tactics?," we get the following quote:

quote:

Destroying the Death Stars, for a death toll of nearly one and a half million people, the vast majority of whom were low-level Imperial officers or civilian workers?
