Spinning out of its Divergence Free Comic Book Day Preview, DC Comics has confirmed massive changes for its two greatest icons: Batman and Superman.

In the issue’s Batman story, a sneak of what’s to come in Batman #41, storytellers Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo confirmed that Commissioner Gordon has indeed replaced Bruce Wayne as Gotham City’s Batman. The development springs out of the events of Batman: Endgame, where Batman and Joker perished beneath a mountain of rubble. While a resurrection for Wayne seems imminent, Snyder himself confirmed that Batman is certainly dead for now. Indeed, the preview story makes mention that Gotham hasn’t seen the original Batman in months.

Filling in for Bruce Wayne, Gordon will fight crime in a Gotham City Police Department-sponsored robotic Batman suit, and sport a groomed new look (we’ll miss the mustache).

Meanwhile, in the pages of Superman, incoming writer Gene Luen Yang and artist John Romita Jr. revealed that Superman’s secret identity as Clark Kent is now public knowledge. And it wasn’t Lex Luthor or Brainiac who spilled the Kryptonian beans, but Superman’s former friend, Lois Lane. The revelation certainly explains Superman’s new look, which is far more subtle any of his previous costumes. We guess bright red capes might be faux paux when trying to go incognito.

DC promises to explore both storylines in full this coming June, when their Divergence event revamps the entire DC Universe publishing line. Jim Gordon Batman makes his debut in Batman #41, while the exposed Superman appears in Superman #41.

its just another story. just like how multiple people have been Thor. i mean thor was a frog at one point.

everything changes in comics. yet everything will stay the same over time.

At the end of the day it'll just be another little section of Batman Wikipedia that no one remembers

That's why I never understand the outrage whenever they do some attention grabbing storyline, like making someone black, gay, or shite like that.

Oh, I know. I just can't believe comic writers keep doing this. I guess there are always readers that will buy them, but I personally can't imagine myself buying a Batman comic with Gordon in a Batman robot suit or Thor as a chick. I know that Bruce will eventually be back.

Again, Thor used to be a FROG. A FROG. People complaining about a female Thor are about 30 years late to the party. Beta Ray Bill says hi.

If the story is good, then it's a good change. If it is not a good story, then the change is bad. BTW - the frog Thor story is amazing.

They'll run with this commissioner Gordon shite for a while and then Bruce Wayne will appear and reveal he didn't actually die in the accident blah blah blah

My view is just the opposite. If it is a good story, you don't need to jump to extreme gimmicks to sell it.

And I know that Thor was a freaking frog. I used the female Thor reference because it is a more current.

shrug...no one stays dead in comics.

If DC redoes it's entire line again (i seem to recall they just did this a couple years ago) it's going to piss off a lot of fans.

oh i forgot to add.

Thor being a chick is dumb. I understand the need to be more inclusive...but give those people you are including their own identities...ie the new Ms Marvel.

Well that was technically Thor. And there's a second, Throg. That's right. Not one, but TWO frog Thors.

Agree.

You mean one of Marvel's greatest D-Level Characters?

Exactly.

And this goes for movies too. So what if Pym doesn't create Ultron. It didn't serve the story to shoehorn him in there.

Changes are ok. Batman will return.

It is all just one big soap opera.

These story lines get tiresome and are impossible to keep up with.

I have to admit, these changes to Batman and Superman fan are hard for me to take. I will say, I am willing to try the Superman change (as I haven't gotten totally bored with the Superman books yet, some 'meh' stories notwithstanding), but this is the end for me with the Batman books for the time being. "Batman and Robin" book aside--which was the BEST Batman book of the line, consistently--Scott Snyder's Batman book has been boring me for a while now (so did his Superman Unchained book) so this change is my exit strategy on his run. But, I was one who dropped Batman when Grant Morrison was writing it, so there you go.

I do have to disagree with two points made in this thread.

was mentioned a few times. So was Spider-Ham. These aren't the best examples when dealing with a major character's status quo change, as Thor as a frog lasted what, two issues or so? A couple issue storyline is one thing, an open-ended status quo change is another. And Spider-Ham? That was a separate book aimed at kids--it never replaced the main Spider-Man. Now the female Thor or Falcon as Captain America? Valid examples there.

Trust me, these changes won't last at all and has zero staying power. It just a quick publicity and money grab.

I just hope they're not stupid enough to torpedo the Superman and Wonder Woman relationship. Individually, they've been having trouble traction in their seperate titles for a while now, but as a team, they are doing fantastic, getting good buzz and there's so much story to tell from this pairing and what incredible adventures they could go through. They could be THE POWER COUPLE comic books has been lacking for decades since its inception and could even further their status as icons of comc books.
