What are your thoughts on this film, and where do you rank it vice other sci-fi mind benders like Matrix, Inception, Brazil and Akira?
Great, underrated movie IMO. One thing I've noticed is how similar Heath Ledger's later performance as the Joker is to Sutherland's role here. Not the character, but the delivery. The inflection and tone of the voice and the various pauses.
And yes, as I'm sure will come up, this movie is way, way better without the intro monologue.

Is a modern classic.
It will be something that we can look back on in years to come. Overshadowed in its time, but superior to a lot of stuff that came out.
I also see the film as somewhat timeless.

It became one of Ebert's favorite movies.

I really enjoy it. I wonder alot about the origins of the city and where they are placed in relation to Earth or home. What comes next for the city. I suppose he makes what he wants of the world. I have the desire to get concrete answers about the world, but at the same time I know that it's best left as a mystery.

While I think this film is looked upon in a positive light, I thought that time would have treated it better. I feel like it is one of the better science fiction films of the past 25 years.
In my opinion.

I really liked it, but would be tough to explain how a human got the aliens powers all of a sudden from a biological stand point. Plus, a young Melissa George gets nude in it, which is nice.

It is a great sci-fi movie, one of the best ever made imho. I would put it and Children of Men as the two great sci fi movies made in the last 20-30 years.

I have trouble calling Brazil sci-fi.

fantastic movie. just watched it again about a month ago. it stands up to time similar to the way They Live does; has deeper layers than other crappy 80s sci-fi.

Rewatched it again a few weeks ago. Probably been about8-10 years since I first saw it.
On the rewatch, I wasn't overly fond of Sutherland's acting / accent.
Other than that, it is a solid film which you can't guess what is coming next.

Great movie. I'd put it together with Blade Runner and Brazil as my favorites of the genre.
