I truly believe Daniel Day Lewis is one of the most gifted actors on the planet, he is amazing at his craft and the roles he plays, he plays them with such authenticity that you really believe he is that character. The depth in which he portrays characters is legendary.

My only complaint with Daniel Day Lewis is that I wish the man would make more movies!! I've read that he is notoriously selective with what scripts he accepts, and that is evident by the fact he's only been in five movies since the start of the millenium. I know that Lewis takes his roles with the seriousness of life and death, he does everything he can to become his character, living as his character on and off the set. So with the amount of time and dedication he gives to each role, it's easy to see why his movies are so few and far between. I just hope his next movie comes out soon!

check out In The Name Of The Father. a very low-key performance compared to his over-the-top characters, but it has a subtle brilliance about it. great movie

He is top notch. My 8 yr-old son watches the Last of the Mohicans as often as possible. Jumps around in the living room like he's fighting the Hurons throughout most of it.

His greatest performance and I bet you 90% of the idiots on this board haven't seen it.

Not like he has a huge catalog of movies. I would think most people have seen his major films. Left Foot being one.

I've often wondered if he doesn't like acting. He doesn't seem to do it very often.

I thought he might be a total nightmare to work with and maybe that limited his roles, but I've never heard rumors to that effect so he just must not like acting often.

He's currently on a 5 sabbatical. He says his roles take so much out of him. Plus he doesn't care about making as much money as possible. He enjoys his carpentry and all that.

My Left Foot is unreal.

Is he a method actor?

He "becomes" his character more than anyone...maybe ever.

He's selective because he takes his work seriously as art. He doesn't do it just for a pay check. He does it to create quality. He wouldn't be as good as he is if he wasn't so selective.

I saw an interview with him once where he said that his son (children?) didn't even know that he was an actor until he got older. He just thought that DDL was a carpenter or something like that. I think it would be more accurate to say that he doesn't like being a movie star. He's too low key for that. He just likes the craft of acting.

Reading about the extremes he went to to stay in character for My Left Foot was crazy.

quote:

My Left Foot (1989)

According to the "Making of My Left Foot" segment on the Special Edition DVD, Daniel Day-Lewis broke two ribs during filming from assuming the hunched-over position in his wheelchair for weeks of filming. He also would refuse to come out of character. On visits to the set canteen, other people would have to help him with food. On one visit from his English agent, Day-Lewis again refused to come out of character as Christy Brown, and his frustrated agent took off.
