CW's The Flash is simply the remaking of CW's Smallville
Posted by LeonPhelps on 12/4/14 at 9:39 am01
Has anyone else noticed this? I watched every episode of Smallville and have watched every episode of The Flash to-date. Here are the similarities to me:
1. The "coming" of both superheroes was heralded by a major event - the meteors in Smallville and the particle accelerator explosion in The Flash
2. That same major event also created almost 100% of the villains of the week.
3. Both have a strong, all-knowing father figure that has more knowledge from various subjects than someone in that position (farmer/cop) should reasonably have.
4. The father figure knows the superhero's secret basically immediately, works to keep the secret a secret, and encourages the son to help others
5. Both have known their crush most of their lives and have been friends with said crush since childhood but the crush dates the handsome blond guy that has it out for our superhero. The blond guy might even be the exact same actor for Smallville and The Flash (too lazy to look it up but they look and sound the same).
6. Both have a super intelligent, hot female "nerd" that is in on the secret fairly early and helps with the villain of the week by supplying information.
7. Both have an older friend/mentor of nefarious intentions. The fake wheelchair bound guy seems to me a mashup of Lex and Lionel Luther. The fake wheelchair guy clearly has some other agenda and is all too happy to kill/send people to their deaths to achieve his goals. Much like Lex/Luthor.
I don't mind because I loved Smallville and am enjoying The Flash. It just seems obvious that they are retelling the same story with small variances. I predict it will take a few seasons before Lana, I mean Iris, finds out The Flash's identity. She will be angry at first before coming around, unless she decides to leave the show thinking she will have some movie career (lol at Kristin Kreuk for this).

First time I have agreed with you on something. I thought the same thing about Arrow.
Say what you will about Gotham, but it branched off and didn't start with a teenage Bruce and started with Gordon and is a little darker.

I haven't watched any of Arrow, surprisingly. By the time I even knew the show existed, a whole season had passed and I was too lazy to catch up. But I enjoyed his character on The Flash.

The Star Wars EU is not, nor was it ever, canon.

That sentence is incomprehensible and, to me, false.

I'm a fan too. Re-reading The Last Command now, but I'm excited for the new stuff as well.

I couldn't say I never watched Smallville. At first I was reluctant to watch the Flash or Arrow because they were CW shows. I figured they'd be more soapy than serious action dramas. But I have to say I think they found the perfect mix of the two and comic books seem to work very well in this serialized format. I think there's a lot of potential in these shows much more so than comic book movies.

I keep watching but I just don't like the show. I feel it's just a cop drama set in Gotham.

I have thought Arrow was different from Smallville in a couple of ways. First, while they do have villains of the week, they also have season long, over arching villains like Deathstroke in season 2, Malcolm Merlyn in season 1, and Ra's al Ghul this season that build to the season finally. I don't remember Smallville doing that until the last couple of seasons.
Secondly, Arrow is a lot darker and grittier than Smallville was. I mean, in the first season Oliver was going around killing folks.
Lastly, Smallville always seemed more "soap operaish". Arrow tends to keep that to somewhat of a minimum. Yeah, they have romantic relationships in Arrow, but they are nowhere near to the level as Smallville had at times when it comes to the focal point of the storylines in my opinion.
When it comes to Flash, it is a little more like Smallville in the overall tone of the show. But I think they have a grander plans for a lot of their villains of the week because they'll eventually unite and form his rouge gallery. When Clark dispatched a villain of the week, you rarely ever saw them again. I don't think that will be the case in The Flash. I also think that you'll see an overarching villain show up that will be the carried to the end of the season.
And while their is some romance stuff going on with the Barry, Eddie, Iris love triangle, it still isn't quite as "soap operaish" as Smallville could be at times in my opinion.

It's not simply a remaking of Smallville.
You're looking for similarities and ignoring the huge differences between the series.
Yes, they used a similar device to create the supervillains and they moved Barry's crush on Iris back to his teen years, but that's about it.
Superheroes have families and confidants... Pa Kent and Det. West aren't the only characters filling that slot. And Pa and West couldn't be more different in their approach to having super-sons. Pa was hesitant to have Clark do anything unless it was absolutely necessary. West actively wants Barry out there helping people.
The female "nerd" comparison is way off as well. The personal relationships are entirely different. Also, Chloe was Clark's main "nerd" while Barry has an entire team (one of which happens to be a woman).
Lex and Wells couldn't be more different. Wells has a plan and knows everything there is to know about the Flash. Lex knew nothing and had to slowly build plans as he tried to figure out what was going on.
There are similar devices used here and there in these series, but there's no way that The Flash is simply the remaking of Smallville.

I'm not going to argue that they're the same show, but this does stick out every time I see an episode.
That and the 'Streak/Blur' thing and the similarities between Lois writing about Clark and Iris writing about Barry.

The chick nerd Cloe didn't know about Clark for several seasons
that's a pretty major difference
both series have Green Arrow in them. You forgot that one.

There are definitely enough major differences that it's not a carbon copy. Even the two similarities I named were about 7 seasons apart from each other on Smallville.

Didn't Smallville have the Flash in a episode as well?
They had Bart Allen, or Impulse. Awful character on that show.

The great thing is that they seem to be learning. With Flash they've taken what worked on Smallville and Arrow and built a show that is firing on all cylinders.
The villain creating event from Smallville, the strong support team from Arrow... And zero fear of having a hero in costume and in action from the start.
They've got it down to a science.

So they had the grandson of Barry and Iris on Smallville via time travel?

Does that mean we'll get Clark Kent in Arrow at some point?
I believe the producers said this shared Arrow-Flash universe is a Superman-less universe.
