Ok this is going to be my first group re-read. I know nothing. Do we all read the same 3 POV's a week and then post on them along the way?

Ok since I'm on AFFC right now, I don't think I'll read along w/ yall.....but I'll def be following the threads. I'm down for it. And I may join in down the road.

And since yall are deciding how much to read at a time, I do about 2-3 POVs a day. I read during my lunch break (~45 min) and will sometimes read a chapter at home (except for ASOS...I devoured it...again.) So I don't know if yall want to stick w/ 3 POVs a week or what...maybe everyone should post how fast they read to pick an average?

But seriously, yall pick what yall want. I'm down either way

I think 3 POV's a week would allow us to dissect the most information. I'm doing my third pass through Dance right now with the look deep at everything approach and I am already asking new questions 8 POV's in.

Plus it will kill more time this way. I think this is secretly why we are excited about the reread. We will likely only have 4 years left after we finish

Wasn't sure the protocol for starting a new thread with this one going so I'll just do it here.

I want to talk about something that truly pains me throughout the books....

Lannister pride.

I'm sure most would agree that Tyrion and, surprisingly, Jamie become two of the best characters in the book. Characters we continually root for.

I love their perspective, but it kills me almost everytime GRRM puts their thoughts in italics while they are having a conversation.

If they would just say what they are thinking, I feel like people would trust them and see them in a totally different light, but their pride keeps them from saying what they really feel and think.

It's tragic really. They could change the whole tone and direction of the game but they're too stubborn.

Specifically, Jamie's treat session with Edmure Tully, and almost every chapter with Brienne. Even his face to face with Catelyn could have gone differently if he had told her his true thoughts.

Tyrion's most obvious example is all of his interactions with Sansa. The two of them could have helped save each other, and they both deserved to be able to have someone to confide in, but Tyrion was too bitter about his father casting him aside without giving credit for all he did to save the city and the throne to try to comfort this child, his wife, who has literally had EVERYTHING taken from her by his monstrous relatives.

His interactions with Griff and Jorah as well.

We've learned the history behind Tywin's pride, and his tension with Aerys over Cersei being shunned as bride for Rhaegar as well.

Cersei is the most prideful of all of course, but her pride isn't hiding some inner goodness like Jamie and Tyrion, she is completely evil and selfish imo.

Just wanted to see everyones thoughts on that tragic and costly family flaw.

For Tyrion, I believe it is part of his genius. He keeps his true thoughts to himself and uses sarcasm as a way to get people to underestimate him. He guards his words as to not give away his intentions which allows him to remain one step up on whoever he is dealing with.

Jamie on the other hand is a tragic hero whose only crime is being a freak who is in love with his sister. I honestly think he is as good hearted as they come. The man saved everyone in King's Landing's life and in the process became a pariah. I think this is why he hides his true thoughts. He wants to do the right thing and wishes that he and his sister, before Feast anyway, could be accepted. But despite doing what he knows is the right thing as far as Aery's is concerned, everyone hates him. All of his evil acts have come as a result of his love for his sister , and the fact that he is finally starting to believe everyone that have been calling him shite for years. Personally, by the end of the novels I believe he will be one of the most honorable knights in Westeros.

I get frustrated with the characters sometimes when thier pride gets in the way of progress.

But I really think that this is part of the genius that is GRRM. Most, if not all, of his characters are critically flawed. And this precisely what makes them so interesting.

I thought this treatment of Ser Ilyn was really interesting and kind of proved he is a thoughtful, good guy. Same thing with Pia and the squire.

He already is honestly....

I mean yea, he pushed Bran out of a window but can you comfortably without any doubt say that you wouldn't push ANYONE out of a window to protect the person you love the most in life and the only person who loves you?

"The things I do for love"

He knows his actions are wrong yet he is willing to take that burden upon himself for the sake of his family and his love.

Sure we say its odd that hes fricking his sister, yet even us as fans of the story find no fault in Aegon marrying TWO of his sisters and all of the other incestuous relationships of the Targs.

While Jaime did forsake the vows of the Kingsguard he held true to the first vow he ever took. The Knight's vow. He protected the weak at the cost of his honor.

He is truly selfless and gallant... A TRUE knight.

So, according to your logic, he protected the weak (Cersei?) when he pushed Bran out the window?

Really selfless and gallant.

no he was protecting his family there. Sorry, I forgot to specify...

The moment he killed Aerys he forsook his vows to the Kingsguard while also staying true to his vow as a knight.

The entire "Kingslayer" moniker he has is rather strange to me. Aerys was a true psychopath who was a muderous, foul human being. He saved countless lives with the tip of his sword.

I'll put out the schedule tomorrow (I'm completely spent right now). We'll read then start discussion those POVs on XX date. Then we read 3 more and start discussing those on the next date and so on.

In that world honoring ones vows seems to take precedence. No one talks bad about Ser Arthur Dayne even though he stayed loyal to the crazy king (technically stayed loyal to Rhaegar I guess but he didn't change sides even after Rhaegar's death on the Trident).

Honor isn't black and white as Jaime has repeatedly shown. The venom he gets for being the "Kingslayer" should be praise.

Then shouldn't everyone think of Arthur Dayne as some sort of dishonorable man because he stayed loyal to Aerys till the end? Yet, he is viewed as one of the most honorable men in all of Westeros.

I agree with you that Jaime killing Aerys was the right thing to do but he forsake his vows to do it. How can anybody trust a man who forsakes vows as sacred as being one of the Kingsguard?

one day soon I'm gonna go back and read this thread. So awesome how much ASOIAF has grown thanks to the show

NFL players as GOT characters

ELI MANNING = TYRION LANNISTER

Two men, forever in the shadow of their older brothers. As a misshapen dwarf, no one takes Tyrion Lannister seriously or even expects anything out of him… but he masterminded the plan that saved King’s Landing from the Baratheon forces. The equally underestimated Eli Manning managed to win two Super Bowls against seemingly impossible odds, and still no one believes it because he looks like a fricking goofball.

No, but he was certainly loyal to a fault.

Because he stepped outside the notion of "false honor" and saved thousands of lives from being torched by Wild Fire.
