They have the shield against wights because they don't have full control over their zombie hoard and don't want them coming down where the Children and Bloodraven are.
Then why not let the Others and ColdHands in?
i can understand the mindless wights, but i have to imagine their magic is strong enough to let intelligent beings through

Maybe they've put a curse on the door to make sure people with blue eyes don't get in. Maybe that's the only way it could happen.

It could end up being good for him in the show.

Brienne's "word" to UnCat
From "So Spake Martin":
quote:
...at miscon 2012, george r.r. martin read not one but two chapters from winds of winter! he also answered a pressing and important question: what word did brienne of tarth scream in feast for crows?
<George R.R. Martin> turned the question on the audience and asked if anyone had figured it out - we shouted all kinds of dumb stuff, “jaime”, “sapphires”, etc. but some other genius in the second row said “sword”! george confirmed that the word brienne screamed was “sword”; lady stoneheart gave brienne the choice of either swearing her sword to her or being hung, saying “sword or noose”, and as brienne was being hanged she screamed “sword”

Was watching a rerun of last week's show last night...really wondering if Martin (and Weiss et al) use the show as a way to emphasize things from the books/ add stuff Martin didn't include but wishes he had...
Speaking of The Others, WTF is the deal with these:
(S1)
(S3) - "Always the artists" - Mance
The first design (bad angle - wish I could find a better one) almost looked to be a rune or hieroglyph of some sort.
The second one could be as well...but it looks more or like a "crop circle"
Is this a hint at something about the Others?
If so, why not mentioned in the books?
If they are aliens...

As far as the patterns, I am sure they are a message from the Others. A way of saying your days are numbered/we are coming.

Ah, that makes sense. I knew Sword was on of the more probable words being proposed.
It also fits with Brienne trying to draw Jamie off somewhere after that. I hope Brienne does not end up being Jamie's downfall in the end though. I'd rather see her break her oath to UnCat (that bitch)

i think its their way of emphasizing that the Others are intelligent beings not just zombies (wights)
same reason for showing this guy:

Yeah. I, at least, am pretty convinced that the Others are intelligent. They ride horses. They have swords of apparently very advanced design. They wear armor (at least in the books, the ones show I'm not so sure about).
I think Martin has said something about the White Walkers being like Barrow Wights or something. Not human - another species but I agree I hope they are not pure out and out aliens.
As to what they are trying to say by the symbols: Maybe it's something like. Hey guys, let's be friends. All we want is your male infants and to kill people who hang out north of the wall. Why are you guys always freaking out about us?

...kept the letter...biding time
I intended that to be a lil tongue-in-cheek, cuz I didn't see the timeline supporting a bun in the oven that quickly...
BUT
I have been assuming the affair began with them running off together-even though Martin already tells us (Knight of the Laughing Tree) it could've been going on since the Tourney at Harrenhal...at least somewhere in between it and Brandon's rant at the Red Keep. Plenty of time for the affair to get hot n heavy and the pregnancy being the reason for the "abduction"
Maybe I should've looked at all this in a more real-life sense:
- 2 people get caught up in a "forbidden love" situation, as each are promised to another
- after a period of time where one or both try to fight it off, they give in and secretly start bumping uglies*
- this goes on for a time, both practicing excellent discretion...no one suspects anything...all is well.
- uh-oh** "I'm pregnant. What are we gonna do now?"
- they elope.
- She writes a letter of explanation...
* What was the purpose of Rhaegar's solitary trips to Summerhall ? Where was Lyanna during these "trips"?
** A pending date at the altar with Robert Baratheon could be the uh-oh, but it is never identified. Cat and Brandon's is the only upcoming nuptial at this time.
So It's possible that letter (if it exists) is proof that R+L = J.

apparently for all of roberts rebellion until the battle of the trident, rhaegar was at the tower of joy with lyanna
so they may have just gotten pregnant when they first got to the Tower of Joy
but i think your theory that they got pregnant and then ran off to the ToJ so that she wouldnt be shamed is more accurate
and he stayed with her because she was pregnant
