This makes perfect sense as I've never seen any logical reason for them to follow the Boltons as long as there was a single other alternative. I think they will turn coat and skewer the Bastard and follow Jon once he's arisen. In the meantime, they will serve Stannis. I believe Stannis will follow Jon, even to the point of his own death, once he realizes that Jon, not himself is Azor Ahai reborn. He will die for Jon to atone his sins as a kinslayer.

I just read the Northern Conspiracy. Just to add to that, now that Jon is dead, he is released of his duty to the Night's Watch. He learns of his legitimization and accepts it. Jon Stark. King of the North. He has all the men that shelly mentioned, plus his wildlings that he let inhabit The Gift.

What does all this do to R+L = J?

well he is still a Stark. If all other Starks are gone then its his crown to accept.

I feel as though Rickon will get Winterfell, Bran will stay north of the wall.

I wish

To be fair though, I didn't come up with all the Mormont stuff, just the Umber/Dustin/Stout/Manderly one. I read that all on the westeros forums. Here's a link to one of the threads if anyone is interested. I can probably come up with a summary though. (There's 2 more threads that discuss it as well) .

Yeah. And what better way to truly unify the North and South Kingdoms than one able leader who is heir to both.

I'm not a history major, but weren't Scotland and England united kind of that way. For awhile at least.

This implies that Varys wanted Ned to live. Everyone expected Ned to survive. Joffrey's actions weren't expected. I don't see how Varys had a hand in Ned's death.

Now I might be confusing the show with the books but doesn't Varys flat out tell Ned he's a "dead man" during his visit in the dungeon?

Whether he had a hand in it or not Varys knew he wouldn't make it to the wall.

And with all this "Varys knows but doesn't have a hand in it" is smelling more and more like he has a hand in it...

You are confusing the show with the books. Varys did not want Ned dead, period. The one time we for sure see Varys when he is 100% honest about his plans is when Arya spies on Varys and Illyrio underneath Kings Landing. During that discussion Varys and Illyrio discuss how they are not ready for war to break out quite yet (i.e. neither Aegon or Viserys were in position to attack Westeros).

Varys knows that Ned finding out about Jaime and Cersei would lead to war, and he also knows Ned being killed would lead to war. The last thing Varys would want is Ned dying if he is trying to stall for time to allow Aegon to be ready to rule (or Viserys).

Sending Ned to the wall would be perfect for Varys, as it would settle things down enough to prevent war but also allow everything to be at a huge simmer, with him only having to provide a touch here or there to create chaos.

More snowmen had risen in the yard by the time Theon Greyjoy made his way back. To command the snowy sentinels on the walls, the squires had erected a dozen snowy lords. One was plainly meant to be Lord Manderly; it was the fattest snowman that Theon had ever seen. The one-armed lord could only be Harwood Stout, the snow lady Barbrey Dustin. And the one closest to the door with the beard made of icicles had to be old Whoresbane Umber. (p. 542)

I think these will be all of the Bolton turncloack Lords. It's always been my view that there will be no Battle of Winterfell...Roose and his men are killed inside and whatever host he sends out will fall in the ice. The wildcard is who catches Ramsay.

ETa: On a similiar note, I believe in that chapter Theon sees Whoresbane and Manderly chatting which is very interesting. In ACOK, Luwin and Rodrik commaned the Umbers, Whoresbane and Mors, to work with Manderly on water defense against the wildings. That would lead me to believe they've been in contact for a while and are in league against Bolton.

Castles can be rebuilt. It isn't like the stones were burnt with dragon fire.

I'm thinking this is the best place to ask this:

What is the proper line of succession at the present time using the following assumptions:

1 - Assuming it can not be proven that Cercsi's children are not from Robert. And assuming the succession by conquest of Robert is valid. I would say:
- Tommen
- Myrcella
- One of Robert's bastards?
- Stannis? (assuming no children from the first two.
- Shireen?
- Then who?

2 - Assuming it can be proven that Cersci's children are not Robert, but still assuming the succession by conquest is valid:
- One of Robert's bastards?
- Stannis?
- Shireen
- Then who?

3. Assuming the succession by conquest was not valid or can be overturned by another conquest:
- Danny? (I'm not buying Aegon right now)
- Jon?
- Whoever can take over?

Baratheon:

Stannis
Shireen
Edric Storm

"Baratheon"/Lannister:

Tommen
Myrcella
Stannis
Shireen
Edric

Targaryen/Blackfyre:

Aegon
Jon
Dany

Nice theory, but that means either Wyman Manderly or Samwell Tarly will have the happy ending...

ISWYDT. Actually, I'd like to see Sam do well. And he may reflect Matrtin a bit. But, while I like Manderley, I think GRRM goes in a little more for pizza than Frye pie.
