Christ. Every superhero needs to be naturalistic. Keep your archetypes in the comics, where they belong.

Comic books are for fricking dorks. Not geeks, but full on nerds.

Nolan batman > any fricking comic themed movie.

I imagine the same will be true for superman.

Yep. I dont want to see the flying boyscout that everyone automatically loves. You know if there was a powerful alien flying around here there would be a large faction of people freaking the frick out. Show that. And show Superman's struggle with what he is and where he is.

Exactly. I think that's exactly what Nolan, Goyer, and Snyder are going for in their reboot.

That story was called Watchmen.

No difference in watching a comic-based film or reading the comic. Full on dorks post in Superman threads and play video games as well.

Smallville touched on this. They were being forced to come forward and people were turning against them.

Nolan's not taking it as far as Smallville did in the beginning though. I don't think the two approaches are comparable.

I just meant that they touched on the idea that not everyone would automatically love him, not that Nolan would go as in depth into his private life.

Oh, I gotcha. Nolan saying this doesn't bother me. It's a different time now and you have to approach these types of superheroes diffently to be successful.

I like this idea. Assuming that they continue Kal-El's inherent goodness and desire to protect his adopted planet, I'd like to see a more realistic take on how he deals with the fact that human beings are in large groups one thing: Stupid. How does he interact with the world? You dont think China, Russia, and the Middle East would be a little upset that the USA has an all powerful alien running around? What happens when he can't be two places at once and pisses off someone? (Not being able to spin the world backwards and fix that....)

Lets be honest, if a helicopter fell off the top of the Daily Planet and a dude in a red cape came flying up, picked it up, and put it back on top of the building, I seriously doubt that everyone would just cheer.

This. And I think that's EXACTLY what they are going for in this movie. If you watch the extended trailer from Comic-Con, there is a part in the trailer where a bus full of kids falls into a river or lake or whatever. It floods, sinks, and is miraculously saved by Clark. There is a woman, with a condescending and skeptical tone, voicing over the scene. She says: "My son was on the bus. He *saw* what Clark did!" And then, a few seconds later, you hear the voice of Kevin Costner - who plays Clark's earthly father - saying, "People are afraid of what they don't understand."

So I assume that there will be a lot of fear and hatred directed towards Clark and Superman.

I dunno. I'm not sold on the "tortured soul" concept of Superman.

Of all the superheroes, Superman is the one that historically has been treated with the least emphasis on real-world issues a la Batman or even Iron Man.

Superman has been the Big Blue Boy Scout through all of this, decade after decade. Some may crave a different take on it, but honestly, I think we've had plenty of movies lately with superheroes conquering their inner demons.

I think what's been missing from these Superman films is a upper-level villain whose arrival brings the scale and spectacle of a world-threatening event. We're talking Brainiac leading an alien horde or Darkseid showing up. Enough with the backstory. We all know Superman's backstory. What I'm saying is... TURN SUPERMAN LOOSE. Let him blow us away.

A film that does more Superman backstory is just the same ol' shite. So this one will be more realistic and introspective. Woopee.

The best part of Singer's Superman movie were the action scenes. The reason why people love Superman II? Action scenes against good villains.

Nobody talks about how great that scene on the Kent farm was or how conflicted Superman must have been to give away all that he is for the love of Lois Lane. Yawn.

They talk about the fight with General Zod and the cool space shuttle rescue scene instead.

Blow shite up. Superman is not material to be minimized. It should be maximized.

And yes, I am aware that General Zod is in this movie. I hope they don't sit in Central Park playing chess, talking about what a bummer it is to be all powerful and have 40% of the people not like them.

They said it wouldn't necessarily be darker, just more realistic.

And frankly, I love it. The reason why Superman has always been so boring is that we rarely see his motivation, his turmoil...he's just a good guy that always does the right thing that everyone loves.

Much of the world would hate him, and he would certainly have conflicts about who he could and couldn't save, whether he should have a life outside of Superman at all, etc.

It makes for a more interesting character, and ultimately, character development is what makes a movie.

this.

I am not taking shots at ppl who love Superman. We all have different taste.

But IMO Superman is a bore and I have very little interest in him unless it's a story that has him needing help from us lowly humans

I posted this in a thread back in the summer. Nolan's approach sounds good to me.

quote:

Also, if done right, Superman is an excellent character. Superman material has basically been stripped mined, but I still think there are some potential storylines they haven't touched. As I've said before, grounded Superman in as much reality as possible, it would be really interesting. In every movie, Superman is just universally celebrated by everyone. Would the world be able to truly accept a man who could almost solve every one of our problems? Many of the "fires" he would put out are the same fires that keep people in power and make others wealthy. Would people get spoiled and hold it against Superman for not solving every crisis...even if they happen at the same time? Make the narrative less about the Man of Steel and more about how the world accepts/rejects him. Then have Lex Luthor develop into a symptom of that rejection. Everyone says Superman is boring because he is so powerful. Well, make his power the issue and have the reaction to it become a theme that drives the movie. When approaching Batman, Nolan asked the question about how would a city react if a man dressed as a bat jumped from rooftop to rooftop fighting crime? I think you can apply that same reasoning to Superman but on global scale. How would today's world react to an invincible savior?

I would be interested in a Superman story that doesn't make him the bad guy per se but puts him in a situation where it's not so clear of who is or isn't the bad guy

kinda like his arc in TDKR graphic novel

where he maybe thinks he is on the right side but turns out he isn't

and his power has been lost because of it

Honestly though, this should be the sequel, not the first one. Really the first one should merely focus on Superman's relationship with Metropolis and it's people, with only a few journalists and people like Luthor should be greatly against his presence. Most Americans, while at some unease, would largely be happy that the Superman exists and he is American.

The second one should go after the international reaction of Superman's presence. Terror and corruption would be at an all time with the other governments scared shitless. Then someone steps in who is just as powerful as Superman and can take him down. He actively destroys Superman's legacy and starts world war.

Third one should focus on more extraterrestrials coming to Earth, such as Brainiac or Darkseid.
