Both were funny but I will take John Candy all day.

John Candy by a mile.

Candy. This isn't even a competition.

Farley had a great 2-3 movie stretch and was better at sketch comedy.
Candy was a much better comedic actor and had some actual acting chops.

Chris Farley basically had 2 funny movies and they were basically the same exact trope. John Candy had several classics with differing characters.
Spaceballs and The Great Outdoors were both funnier than any Farley movie, and I loved Tommy Boy as a teen. Then you throw in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Uncle Buck, and Nothing But Trouble. It's not even close.

Their only connection is being fat

In Oliver Stone's epic JFK (1991) Candy took a swing at his first dramatic act in a major motion picture and knocked it out of the park. I just can't see Farley taking a serious role like that so I'm going with Candy.

All of Farley's movies sucked. Tommy Boy is the only one that's passable. He is only funny for 5 minutes at a time, he could never sustain a full movie.

Farley was great, but let's not pretend like they're in the same league. Candy was a genius and a great actor.
I honestly think Farley could have been a great dramatic actor if he were still alive. His comedy career would have run its course and some director would have put him I some independent movie here he would be incredible.
Nobody with that many demons and Darkness go a whole career without tapping into it and giving the performance of a lifetime. Some filmmaker could have gotten it of him.
I also thought Candy should have gotten an Oscar nomination for Uncle Buck... It was a real acting performance and the overwhelming majority of dramatic actors couldn't have pulled off the charm and nuances of that role.

Loved them both.
Was very sad when each died.
And in general, I hate celebrities and dont care when they die.
Candy, Farley, and Phil Hartman's deaths made me sad because each was very talented and made me laugh.

I can't think of one Farley movie I'd watch as an adult, I can think of several from mr. Candy.
