Movies about EDM apparently suck even more than EDM

quote:

According to Box Office Mojo, We Are Your Friends now boasts the title of third worst wide-release debut in recent Hollywood history; state-side, the film took in $1.77 million on 2,333 screens, which comes out to a poor $758 per screen. If you’re even heard of the worst two U.S. wide film releases not counting the Saw 10th anniversary re-release (Delgo and Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure), then you clock even more time at the cineplex than most die-hard cinephiles do.

I guess when you factor in how much money each film has made per screen one could say that.

However, WAYF isn't going to lose anywhere near the amount of money that Fant4stic will.

maybe not but F4 is getting pretty close to breaking even. its at 146m worldwide. i think the estimated budget with marketing was 200m.

if it gets close, the dvd and rentals could make it break even. its a steaming pile of shite, no doubt, but the foreign market is really saving Fox's arse right now.

no it isnt

it has to double the total budget to do that.

there is no way it gets to $400m in combined box office and DVD/BluRay sales.

current estimates are that they will lose at least $60m.

which would be 300m but why does it need to double the budget to break even?

If the advertising pushed it up to $200m it needs to make much more than $300m to break even.

The budget must be doubled b/c of the splits with theaters. Also there may be producers, actors, etc that have a percentage of the gross as their pay. With this particular movie it's been reported that Marvel gets 5% of the gross right off the bat since it's their licensed property.

Now each theater chain negotiates the splits independently of each other and there are things like the studio tending to get more of the opening weekend that can change the amount needed but the 50% rule is the best way to do a rough estimate.

The thing that is really going to kill Fox's chances of turning a profit is they have pretty much zero outside merchandising cash coming in from this.

yeah i dont see them making a profit on this. it just looks like their loss wont be nearly as devastating as it first looked.

im not 100% on theater cuts, but from my understand is now adays theaters really dont get much anymore. all their money comes from concessions. domestically that is. foreign, i know the studio kills those theaters on splits. thats not even a factor for them.

theres also no way of knowing how their waterfall payout is structured. actors, for example, are very rarely first in line unless you are hollywood royalty (not the case here). also, payouts are usually based on profits. so the studio has to recoup loss before it pays anyone.

fox could end up losing money here but the way foreign is going, itll be small. but with how god awful production went on this, we will hopefully see the property change hands in some capacity.

If it was going to open in China I might agree with you but since it isnt I think they are pretty much screwed.

It really isnt doing all the well in foreign markets aside from a surprisingly decent return in Mexico. LINK

UK, France, and Brazil seem to be giving them a good showing. Either way, its giving them a prayer of not going completely under. The industry was pretty much due for this type of example though. Hopefully this will be the last time a big IP is abused.... but we will see.
