What’s the easiest way to tell that we’re in the midst of a television programming revolution? Just look at what the networks, the dinosaurs of the industry, are doing to keep up. On Tuesday, CBS detailed its plans for its prospective Netflix competitor “CBS All Access,” a monthly subscription-based online service that will use a new Star Trek show to try and reel in viewers. But where Netflix’s strategy is to become a vast repository of original content, dumping whole seasons of original shows at a time for people to sample at their leisure, CBS is trying to hold onto the weekly model that has defined broadcast strategy for decades. That compromise is currently untested, but it could be the future of the medium.

According to a conference call held with reporters by CBS’s president, Les Moonves, the new Star Trek series will debut in January 2017, with one episode released per week. It’s not much different from how CBS airs its programs now, except that “All Access” will cost an extra $6 a month. The news that Star Trek was returning to TV excited devoted fans of the franchise, but online chatter mostly focused on how quickly they’d be able to watch the season before unsubscribing from the service. The fan site TrekCore acknowledges, sadly, that such a “binge and bail” tactic won’t be possible—which is exactly what CBS wants. As cable cord-cutting grows more common among younger viewers, networks need to find a new way into their pockets, which is why the weekly cliffhanger may not be going anywhere anytime soon.

I'm not sure if I want to pay a monthly fee just to watch Star Trek.

I can't wait to see what crazy antics the writers at the Big Bang Theory come up with to promote this!

nope

I pay my cable company. Part of that goes to pay CBS. I'm not paying any more than that to watch something that they have deemed "not likely popular enough to offer over standard broadcast to sell commercial time"

CBS: "Hi everyone, we still don't get it!"

Thanks for letting us know CBS. I use FOXNow, FXNOW, and ABC GO all the time....because they are free. I've never paid for and don't want to pay for All Access for 1 show.

I tried CBS All Access for a month. It will cool to get access to the full library of CBSs shows (all seasons); however, it was loaded with commercials and just wasn't worth it.

I can deal with Hulu commercials because they at least have shows from multiple channels on there.

Nope. The local CBS affiliate gets a few cents from you but CBS doesn't get paid from the cable company. Not for their broadcast network channel anyway.

That local CBS affiliate is free to you by antennae anyway. They're offering you free programming, you're just not taking it.

As for their paid streaming program, they'll see how profitable it is and go from there. They can still charge for access to new episodes and farm out the older episodes as they age to Netflix or their CW schedules or elsewhere.

Was it really? CBS has the absolute worst shows.

Well NBC has been worse this year for sure, but yeah, CBS shows, outside of a select few, are awful.

Unless they have old shows like MASH or Magnum PI or something. That might be cool.

This would be for people who enjoy watching CBS. If someone came up with an awesome site for streaming rap music, I wouldn't dismiss it as crap (since I don't listen to rap).

They have classic shows like Twin Peaks, Frasier, Taxi, Mission Impossible, and every episode of every Star Trek series.

I doubt that they're expecting Netflix or Hulu numbers, but they'll test to see if having Star Trek increases their audience. Just as Paramount did with Voyager on UPN.

The people who really like CBS shows are the same people who have no clue how the Internet and streaming sites work

I hope they accept AOL.com email addresses

oh, so their business model is jacked, and now they're trying to fill that gap

wouldnt they be better off producing the series, and selling that off to Netflix or Hulu?

I cant get over the fact that they've greenlit a series that they dont have enough confidence in that they could sell ads to for traditional broadcast

They still can. There's an entire secondary audience now for network shows so they can run it on pay per view then wait a year and sell the seasons to Netflix. In the 90's Showtime made you pay to see new episodes of Outer Limits, then they'd sell them as a syndicated show to local stations to make another round of cash off of them.

There are people who pay for HBO just to watch one series. They want to know if people would do the same on streaming.

Why would I pay to watch CBS? This is stupid. They would make more money putting it on tv.
