It's called Cast Away because there's no other cast to speak of for 90% of the movie - just Hanks.
Cute meta thing.

Hanks' monologue about how he decided to stay alive after attempting to kill himself is the part where I lose it usually.
His part about choosing to "stay alive because tomorrow the sun will rise and who knows what the tide could bring" is one of my favorite quotes.

There's just something about this movie that gets to me. I love it. So many tangled feelings come when he goes to Helen Hunts house after he gets back.

Kinda like James Franco sawing his arm off in 127 Hours.

The tooth part is cringe worthy, but poignant. It shows he has brass balls and will do whatever it takes to survive. Hard to watch, but telling of his inner strength.
Very much like the Franco scene, one eye turned, one eye on the tv.

I love this movie and will watch it whenever it is on TV. I think Helen Hunt's character gets a lot of unwarranted hate. She had to move on with her life. However, I don't think the script did her character favors with the amount of change they made happen in 4 years. If I remember correctly, she is feeding her kid in a high chair when she gets the call. So, that puts the kid at least at 6 months old if we stay on the low end. So, that puts her getting pregnant 15 months prior to Hanks getting rescued. That means in 2 years and 9 months, she searched for him, gave up, grieved, met this new guy, dated, got married, then got pregnant. It's a bit of a quick turnaround.

Traditional mourning period is 12 months. 2 years and 9 months is a long time. Not an eternity, but if we use the actors' ages as a rough timeline - she had already waited around for him, because of his career. She was mid-30s when he disappeared. Was she supposed to wait 5 years (until almost 40)? 10 years, mid-40s? Longer? She wanted to have a kid. That's completely normal.
I'm not saying she's a saint. I'm saying this is a tough situation. 1 year with no sign of him? 2 years? I think that's reasonable. And this isn't a stranger, that's someone they knew.
Having said that, I told my wife - after we watched the film - "No body, means I'm coming back. If you move on without a body, then I'm holding you responsible when I come back."
So, message sent on that one.

This movie really captivates me, but I have a fascination with the stranded alone on an island scenario.
The tooth scene always bothers me b/c it seems much more likely that his method would fracture the tooth and make things worse. But just the thought of helplessly enduring a constant toothache in that situation makes me cringe.

The first word out of Hanks' mouth in the movie is, "Time." The last word out of his mouth is, "Thank you." I do not think that is an accident and for me, I think it means our days are a gift, not in our control, and that instead of trying to master time, Hank's character has learned to see ordinary things as miracles, and to have gratitude for the moments he has been given. In between this beginning and end is his transformation. There is a crash; the destruction of his life as he has planned it. All his best intentions and dreams float away from him. He is trapped on an island that he cannot set himself free from. Yet, all along this same journey he is surrounded by the Spirit (in the wings, in the wind, and the air (needed for making fire!). Wings are everywhere in the movie by the way (on the fed ex box, on the plane above him as he flounders in the water, in the shape he cuts from the sides of the portalette for his sail, in the fluke of the whale that appears when he is floating on a boat that has become nothing more than a life-raft). It is the wind and the gift of the tides (grace) which ultimately get him past the breakers and carry him into the path of a random freighter. Hanks' character is being remade in this movie. The physical journey he goes on and the changes you see in his body and in his relationships are matched by what is happening within him emotionally and spiritually. He is not the only one changing. Hunt's character is going through her own difficult journey of transformation too.
TLDR: I think this movie is a metaphor for justification by grace. It teaches that life is fragile, our days are a gift, that the Spirit is with us even when we are alone, and that the crashes we endure may be the place where new life begins.

This movie was one godawful FedEx commercial.

very powerful scene for me (aside from the love lost stuff), was when his return party was over at the office and he's staring at all of the food on the table.
It was all seafood. Which is pretty much all he ate for 5 years.
The the guy says,"Call me...we'll go fishing."

I liked how when he signed the note he put in the door with the box.
His Signature was C. Noland (See no land).

Also exhibit A for "less is more" production. Composer Alan Silvestri wrote only a simple one-themed score that didn't appear until Hanks cleared the breakers in the 3rd act.
A little like No Country, in that Cast Away had miles of open space that featured the sounds of the environment.
