First off, what a great documentary by Michael Hieneman about the Mexican Drug War.
Second, I have a question for those that have seen it:
***SPOILERS***
Who was corrupt in this deal in Michoacan, Mexico? Dr. Mireles was purported to be very pure and just in the beginning, then the documentary begins to reveal some of his organization's flaws as well as his own personal flas near the end.
Then things starting turning after his plane crash and appointing Papa Smurf as the temporary voice of the Autodefensas movement. Was Papa Smurf secretly accepting meth from the cooks to fund the Autodefensas or had meth and other drug monies always been the source by which they can arm their volunteers?
It was a very interesting and sometimes gratifying documentary. It's especially gratifying seeing some of the cartel getting their just rewards. Can you imagine what it must be like to live in an environment like this?

I really wanted to believe that Mireles was a good man. He might still be, but his character and organization became more and more tarnished as the show went on...drastically so. That was great storytelling, I guess. He's now in jail.

I still can't get over how hot the doctors mistress is.

Necro'd.
Just watched this. Great doc. This and The Infiltrator in one weekend, quite the view into the drug war.
I think, like a lot of things, things started out with the right purpose and Papa Smurf went south/was bribed at some point. Power corrupts.
On the note of his mistress...
That whole thing was odd. I'm going out on a limb to say she was hired in some sense to bring the whole thing down. May not have been a prostitute, but even in the scene in the truck - she looked uncomfortable. She was way out of place with everything. I have 0 proof, just a hunch.

It's less about the business and more about the people caught in the middle - Particularly Mexican Rural villages and the US Border towns.

Highly recommend the book "El Narco" if you're interested in the Mexican cartels
