Can someone explain The Vision for me? (Age of Ultron spoilers)

Finally got around to watching Age of Ultron last night. It was a decent movie. I had heard it wasn't very good, and I definitely caught its flaws. Fun flick none the less.
I was kind of confused by The Vision though. How powerful is he supposed to be? When he came to life, I expected him to be an all-powerful superhero that would render the Avengers obsolete, but he pretty much disappeared for a good portion of the final battle.
Stark created him to protect Earth against incoming alien threats, but I didn't really see how he could do that. Is it just that the mind stone will enable him to be so smart that he'll figure it out?

You've got to keep in mind that this is a comic movie which dictates that all characters are as powerful as the plot needs them to be. It's not a knock, it's just the nature of comics.

I'm not an expert, but I'll take a stab at this.
In the original comics Ultron did create the Vision. The key differences are I don't think Vibranium (captain's shield) was involved, and that Ultron himself was created by Hank Pym (Ant man) , and not Tony Stark (Iron Man). Additionally, the jewel in his head wasn't the mind stone, but was basically a fancy solar-power collector and that's what powered him (comic book physics ftw).
In terms of powers, he could shoot infrared/laser beams from his solar jewel. His main thing was that he could change densities -- this allowed him to fly. He could also phase through matter, and materialize -- so he used to put a hand through enemies and then materialize it.
All that being said, the previous post was best -- in comics form he's as strong as needed by the plot.
Here's a link to his origins:

Humans are flawed beings that seek perfection.
The Vision is an almost perfect being that seeks to be more human.

Got caught once by melted asphalt while he was changing densities and bragging about it
