I discovered Game of Thrones through this board so since I am about done with those I figured I'd see what else people on here recommend. I enjoy fantasy and historical fiction, especially medievel times / settings.
something like Sword of Shannara, or The Warlord Chronicles

try out The Dark Elf Trilogy by R.A. Salvatore. If you enjoy that, move onto the Icewindale Trilogy. If you enjoy that, there are several more books in the series. Excellent page turning read, and Drizzt is one of the most badass fantasy characters ever written.

what'd you think of the series?
After reading Martin, it was hard to find much that compares. I haven't read much fantasy outside of ASOIAF and HP, but this is another great book that's the first of a series. The Name of the Wind
For historical fiction, Pillars of the Earth was awesome

Great book. One of the best TV mini series in history (looks real dated now, but still pretty good)

loved it. I havent finished the 4th (song of swords) yet. Very well written, Its rare for a book or series to have so many characters that you actually care about. Also unpredictable, with bit players becoming major roles very quickly.

The two biggest up and commers in the fantasy world right now are Scott Lynch and Patrick Rothfuss.
Scott Lynch's series is called The Gentleman Bastard Sequence. The first book is called The Lies of Locke Lamora. The second book is called Red Seas Under Red Skies. There are a planned 7 books. I would recommend. I would describe it as Merchant of Venice meets Oceans 11 meets Pirates of the Carribean. Its really good.
Patrick Rothfuss' series is the Kingkiller Chronicles. The first book has already been mentioned, The Name of the Wind. It made a BIG splash a couple of years ago. The next book comes out early next year. I have it on my nightstand to read as soon as I finish the book I'm reading now.

I agree (Warlord Chronicles). His Grail Quest series and Saxon Stories are good as well.

If you like Gorge R.R. Martin checkout Daniel Abraham's Long Prince Quartet he works a lot with Martin and has a very good series going.

If you like historical fiction, try the Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian and/or the Flashman series by George MacDonald Frasier.

The Amber series by Roger Zelazny was one of my favorites though it's been a couple of decades since I read it. I just looked at Amazon and there is a "Great Book of Amber" that has all 10 books so it is highly economical. It has a feel something like Martin's series (although with a lot fewer characters) and Zelazny was an excellent writer.
I'll also second the "Master and Commander" series by Patrick O'Brian. I've read them all and listened to all the audio books as well (most several times). The audio books are great for road trips. There are 20 books in the series so it's a lot of reading and it is really top notch.
