Book Board: Is GRRM embarrassed to finish ASOIAF? Spoilers obviously

R+L=J could have been his one trick pony and since it was figured out by fans years ago numerous other conspiracy theories have been espoused by fans. Resentful that the fans stole his thunderous reveal and continue to come up with theories that he might view as better that what he himself has written could the increasing length and delays on GRRM's part to finish the series simply be because he is embarrassed?

Well, that theory is definitely not happening now. It's kind of hard to figure why George would go all Julius Caesar on Jon and lose the story at the Wall. The last two books have really gone off the deep end anyway. I don't know if there can be anyway for him to finish it and match the greatness of the firs three books.
It does seem like he has no idea how he is going to wrap it all up. Unlike J.K. Rowling who knew her entire story really early on and how it would end.

Sometimes when authors try to rely too much on a shocking reveal it detracts from the actual story. A story just needs to unfold the way that it should regardless if people have figured it out. I would think and hope that GRRM isn't so foolish and prideful as to not realize this.
ETA: Also, I'm pretty positive that Jon isn't really dead. It seems that GRRM has strongly hinted as such in at least one interview of his that I read.

Yea I don't think Jon is dead either, but I could see GRRM either 1) changing his parentage or 2) not revealing it

He lost me with the 4th book. There was no need to introduce the stories of the iron islanders who I absolutely give zero fricks about. I was bored, honestly. The guy had a cast of central characters his readers REALLY liked and a story that was sprawling as it was. Why go and add new people half way while lopping off half the stories and leaving them for the next book? Books 4 & 5 should have been edited down to one, without the ironborn stories. ASOIAF book 4 is LOST season 3 - a great story that got bloated and totally lost its way.

There are no Central characters. Everyone is expendable. Even Daneyrs.

Even GRRM has said the 5 main characters are Tyrion, Dany, Jon Bran and Arya

In any series of any sort, how many times does the central installment/s live up to the beginning or end? (Excluding Star Wars) besides if you didn't read Feast and Dance together, Boiled Leather order, you are doing it wrong.

He isn't embarrassed. The fat bastard just doesn't know how to actually finish it.

And they are incredibly good on reread.

Same here. I think at this point even GRRM knows that if he was to rewrite that just because people have guessed it, that he'd catch more hell then he could possibly imagine.
That said, I think it's as simple as he doesn't know how to finish the series or that he's desperately clinging to the success he's had to this point and worries that a shitty ending will eliminate that.

Just because Jon is Rhaegar's rightful heir doesn't mean he'll abandon his duty at the Wall. Jon will not win the realm by conquering it. He will win the realm by saving it.

As long as 95% of the Grand Northern Conspiracy come to fruition I will be a happy reader. Also I'm pulling for Aegon and for Stannis so I'm just like idk what is going to happen.

This is actually what led me to the OP.
Is GRRM embarrassed because the fans are coming up with these theories he didn't intentionally put into the story

Ol' GURM has admitted that some fans have guessed important plot points. He said he avoids fan boards for that very reason, so it wouldn't influence the way he writes the story. He could be full of shite, the only thing we know about this pudgy bastard is he is SLOW.

You don't rewrite an ending you've spent going on two decades setting up, if anything Pete guessing just shows how well GRRM seeded the books.
That said if he wants to to go super bleak there are some options (Jon and Danerys meet in the middle with armies at their backs) or Arya killing Jon post triumph because she doesn't recognize hi. Until it's too late.

It took Tennyson ten years to write In Memorium

I think it's more so that he's written himself into a corner than him being embarrassed.

I read an article online a while back basically talking about this thing. Said what happens when HBO catches him and has to continue on? What if HBO ends the story better than GRRM? At that point, why even bother finishing the novels?
I read the first 3. That's as far as I got. It's just not my cup of tea. Felt like I needed to be taking notes while reading them.

This is definitely what I'm wondering.
