Got this book as a b-day present recently. Since this seems like a better place to post this than the OT- how jazzed should I be to break into it? I'm excited, I'ver heard a lot of good things.

It's widely considered Cormac McCarthy's masterpiece. Hard to imagine it can be hyped up more than that.

Blood Meridian is not for the squeamish, however I enjoyed it immensely.

There are passages within that are them most elegantly written and original that I have ever read.

I did need to reference a dictionary often and it is very difficult to fully appreciate his writing if reading while distracted.

You'll need to read it more than once and probably google quite a few words, but it is an absolute masterpiece of American Literature.

I had to go back and re-read passages quite often because I would lose focus or get distracted halfway through it

This. You're going to have to make time for this book. Turn off your cell phone and internet or read it while camping or something. The more you can immerse yourself in the language and the characters, the better it will be.

Well, presumably whoever gave it to you thinks you're ready for it, so just dive in. It's not quite as tough as some are hinting, but may require a little more attention than a King or Grisham novel.

There are a few passages I stopped to reread and consider, but that's true of any good read.

Honestly, if you've never read anything by McCarthy I'd put it aside and read a couple of his other works just to acquaint yourself to his writing style. The style is quite different and an easier read for your first foray into his work will make the reading of Blood Meridian less frustrating. It is a challenging read at times, but filled with beautiful prose and storytelling.

The Road, No Country For Old Men, or All the Pretty Horses are all much easier reads and will introduce you to McCarthy's writing style.

One of the best books of the last 100 years. Absolutely incredible story.

But it is insanely violent and bleak. You will not be in a better mood for reading this.

My favorite quote from any book.
