Probably none better than Tombstone. True Grit sucked. I liked The Proposition and 3:10 to Yuma. Never saw Lonesome Dove. I got it on my Netflix queue though.

We're on page two and not one of the real movie snobs has brought up The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. They usually say Wyatt Earp is the better of the two Earp based movies too.

They must all be taking the holiday off.

Doesn't that take place on the east coast?

I guess not that it matters The Proposition takes place in Australia.

It takes place in the mid-west in 1757 during the French and Indian War. Bottom line, The Last of the Mohicans is certainly not a western.

A western doesn't have to take place in the old west to be a western.

Point in case, and a better western than Tombstone, is Cop Land.

I classify a western as a movie that takes place in a backwoods/frontier environment in the mid to late 19th Century.

The Last of the Mohicans does not fit that criteria for me.

Taking this criteria, Far and Away and Wild, Wild West are westerns and Yojimbo and Sanjuro are not. Nor is Seven Samurai.

A western has to meet certain criteria, of which period and locale are not a part of.

tombstone, although it takes place in the west, is not a western. It is an action film.

I concur.

Tombstone is a Big Mac--it's quite tasty when you are in a hurry.

Wyatt Earp is a steak you need to take a while to enjoy.

All great westerns, but not exactly what the OP was asking.
