this is about the debates between gore vidal and william f buckley before the 1968 political conventions

the doc works on multiple levels. it's entertaining as a direct viewing of the debates and the people involved. both of the main characters are interesting and very entertaining both in their message and how they deliver their message

the doc works on a deeper level in analyzing the political debate and structure of the late 60s and how the same issues remain today

the doc goes even further, displaying how these debates are basically the proto-talk show, establishing the rhetoric style of news media that we see today

10/10, A+, however you want to describe the rating

I haven't seen the documentary itself yet. However over the last few years I've watched some clips of the debates, including the classic moment when Buckley loses his cool.

Curiously enough I like Vidal as a historical novelist, at least when he keeps the propaganda to a minimum. For anyone who enjoys historical fiction I would recommend Julian and Creation, as well as some entries in the "American Chronicles" series such as Burr, 1876, and Lincoln (once listed by David Duke as his favorite novel!).

i could only imagine that happening today, let alone being on TV in the late 60s

Just watched, thanks for the rec.

The arguments in the clips used for the documentary weren't incredibly substantive. Was this really just 10 sittings where two men who don't like each other attacked each other personally for an hour and a half each night?

like 10-15 minutes each time

and i haven't seen them before but it does seem that gore vidal coming out attacking NR articles led to buckley following suit with ad hom attacks, all leading up to that one big exchange that left both in infamy

i won't lie i knew who gore vidal was as in he existed and wrote and was in some movies i had seen but i had no idea he was some pop celebrity until i watched this doc. the ending did a good job of describing his fade into irrelevance

i only know buckley from looking up clips of thomas sowell on youtube, which led me to finding out who WFB was

The ad Homs start in the first couple minutes, but in watching the full first debate it looks like gore swings first. Buckley tries to say it's hypocrisy for a man who cashed in on Myra in Hollywood to complain about greed, and gore says the character Myra was based on Buckley, "passionate and irrelevant"

It was good,I found there to be a bias in favor of vidal in both the commentary and overall crafting of the film.

Very good though, a great literary/political feud with genuine animosity and intellectual firepower

If anyone would like to learn more about Buckley, watch his interviews with Tom Wolfe over the years on his show Firing Line. Wolfe is the only person I've seen whom WfB seems to let his guard down around and allow himself to be personable

Yeah I saw this a while back. Two brilliant minds, but it just became a circus of personal shots. Still light years ahead of what passes for political discourse nowadays. I mean tonight we had possibly the next POTUS call a fellow Republican candidate a pussy. Literally.

But I just finished watching this:

Gore Vidal - The American Presidency (1999)

Made for the History Channel back when it didn't suck, this is an iconoclastic look at the office of the Presidency: how it was created, and how it has affected the world.

Vidal dwells on his "American Empire" theme that he promoted in several novels and essays. Conservatives will likely be outraged by some of his claims, though in my own case it wasn't until the post-WWII era that I got really annoyed.

Still it's interesting if sometimes inaccurate, giving Vidal the perfect vehicle for his talents. Although he was a good novelist, his true genius was for playing the curmudgeonly Man of Letters.

I watched it. I thought it was OK.

I actually thought Gore Vidale was a historian before watching this. I had no idea he was such a libertine popular figure.

I finally watched it.

And I was in the middle of writing one of my typically brilliant reviews when the TD hamsters died and I lost my post.
