John Doe from Se7en definitely needs to be on here as well. He was such a great and terrifying villain. His motives couldn't be more clear, and it was scary how good he was at accomplishing what he set out to do, and how in-control he was at all times.

I see a bunch of people that are scared of bullies wielding nothing but bluster. Darth Vader wielded an army and a weapon that could destroy a planet.

Hans Gruber

He came to mind as well. Hard not to pick Heath Ledger's depiction of the Joker too.

DV, Ledger's Joker, characters like that don't really come into it for me. They're great villainous characters, and may fit what other people are looking for when it comes to "best", but they don't make me seethe with hatred, and that's my criteria.

Good call with Norman Bates. My other favorite Hitchcock villains are Miss Danvers (Rebecca) and Bruno (Strangers on a Train).

The correct answer is Norman Bates.

Gruber, Vader and some others are right behind.

Killed the police commissioner, Batman's girlfriend and turned one of his most powerful allies against him.
