I'm looking for one that starts at the beginning and covers the origins of the war and takes you to the end of it.

Is Ken Burn's The War, the best?

I give credit where credit is due - Burns' Civil War is, more or less, definitive in my book. I watch it every 12 to 18 months.

For me, The War didn't hold my interest.

Not too long ago, the US Army used extensive sections of The World at War to teach military history at Command and General Staff College. The only reason that stopped was copyright issues, IIRC.

The great thing about The World at War was that it was made at a time when a lot of the major players of that conflict were still alive and lucid. A lot of them were interviewed for the series.

Love the Jimmy Stewart interview where he is identified only as:

James Stewart, Squadron Commander

Victory at Sea

Although not very informative, partly for the tremendous score.

Great, but more of an experience than an education.

By far the greatest musical accomplishment for accompanying a work of non-fiction - by several orders of magnitude.

It gets no better. Sure there are more detailed and specialized documentaries. Dozens of them...but this one is the best all encompassing. I still haven't made it halfway through Ken Burns' The War. Maybe bc it focuses on the home front a little too much for my liking...but I suppose that was the goal. i do like that one of the families it focuses on was from Mobile including one of the prominent lady's being interviewed, who went to Auburn.

I've seen bits and pieces of World at War and The War.

I love WW2 in HD. Available on Netflix I believe.

its the world at war and it isnt even close.

you get to hear an interview from the man who supplied hitler with the gun and buried him as well as hearing an interview from a japanese minister who was involved in the japanese deliberations over whether or not to accept surrender and was then a part of the peace treaty signings on the missouri

it truly just doesnt get any better than it

For the same reason history buffs should check out The Great War, made by the BBC in 1963 (on YT last I checked). "Only" half a century later, many participants could still be interviewed.
