so why do I want to see this in theaters if I lose a half hour of footage and the film's intended scope?

Why not have both versions in theaters? It's a win win and movie going experiment. I'd rather see the R in theaters.
Unless it's a 30 minute sex scene with Bruce and Clark.

Awesome. Can't wait for it. I love the Watchmen Ultimate Cut and the Lord of the Rings Extended Cuts.

Wasn't this movie wrap production like a year ago? Why don't they just split it into two like they should've done with the Dark Knight Rises?
