** possible Game of Thrones season 3 spoiler if you haven't seen it **
This drives me kinda crazy and I'm not sure why. If its something I've heard a lot of good things about and am really interested in I refuse to to start it anywhere except from the beginning. But some people are perfectly fine picking a show up right in the middle. A friend of mine recently told me "hey, we got HBO free for the weekend so I started watching Game of Thrones!". I was like cool, how did you like it? She says it's pretty good, the second episode we watched everyone got killed at a wedding... I put the phone down and had to walk outside.
So where do you guys stand on this? Are you cool with jumping into a show at any point?

Negative. Have to see it from the beginning. If it can't hook me in the first 5 episodes, then I'm done.

I couldn't agree more. I broke up with a chick because she would "casually" watch Cheers reruns without starting from the beginning. Dumb bitch couldn't understand the depth of the characters and therefore the nuanced humorous undertones. fricking whore.

Certain shows that have an over arching story.

Justified
Game of thrones
Breaking bad.

You simply can't do that with.

Always sunny, Seinfeld, any cop drama, you can.

Yep. I can't even handle it when the tiniest detail gets spoiled for me.

It's dumb but I also hate when my gf thinks its OK to just jump into the middle of a series without knowing anything about it. We were deciding on a movie a few weeks back and I suggested the 2nd Hobbit and she said sure. I asked if she saw the first one and she said no, but it didn't matter and that she'd just ask me what was going on. I was like "uhh, the frick you will, bitch... go watch that shite on your own time and report back." How could you possibly understand wtf was happening and enjoy a sequel?

And sometimes when we're watching a show on Netflix that ends on a cliffhanger she will go look up what happens in the next episode before we watch it (and sometimes spoils it for me too). Why even watch the show if you just look up the ending on the internet before?? shite drives me up a wall.

Ok, rant over.

Agree, but you should also have at least a little insight into what the characters are like (George is the pathetic friend, Kramer is the zany neighbor, etc.)

A while back I was trying to introduce my gf to South Park and in one episode Mr. Garrison was normal, and in the next episode I showed her he was a lesbian. So I had to give her a quick background on SP characters so she would understand...not that Mr. Garrison's sexual orientation could be understood

I had a friend watch the finale of Season 1 of Prison Break with my roommates and I (we did it on Netflix), and he finished the whole season from there. He literally skipped the best season of the show.

I couldn't care less. I've done it plenty times and feel like I haven't missed a thing.

Thanks Wikipedia.

My biggest media pet peeve is when I recommend a show to someone and they start half way through and tell me they don't like it.

Happened with Sherlock.

Well, glad to see I'm not alone... And if its a movie I care at all about seeing, no I'm not cool with starting at the 30 minute mark.

Yep. But I also take pride in my TV/Movie suggestions, so it makes me look bad when this happens.

Generally, no. Definitely not if it is a serial drama. Maybe if it is a comedy.

I also avoid next week's previews like the plague. I like to go in fresh!

I watch TV series from the last episode working back to the first quite frequently.

You see, I'm often impatient for resolutions and through this method I don't have to wait, and I feel less manipulated by the producers and writers. Not only that, there can be real drama and suspense in finding out HOW WE GOT TO THIS PLACE. It's like unraveling a crime or taking a glance back through history.

Under my habit, scripted flash forwards are my own flashbacks, and flashbacks are flash forwards into my future views.

Try it sometime.
