That book series is one of my favorite series ever. The movie was kind of meh but I didn't hate it like a lot of people seemed to.

The book Mostly Harmless did suck though. I think Adams was going through a bad place in his life and it totally reflected in the book which was pretty jarring after the great humor of the first books.

I would love for them to make more movies, but the first one kind of flopped. I just want to see the scene in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe with the talking cow.
Fun fact: Robert Downey Jr. was supposed to play Zaphod in the movie, but the studio couldn't get insurance for him (that was right around the time he was in and out of rehab) and Sam Rockwell got the part instead.

I don't view it that way at all - people kept hounding him for more stories - he'd done at least 3 versions already - Radio, Television and the novels. So, seemingly with good cheer, he did So Long and Thanks for All the Fish, which was an internal joke, anyway.

I think Mostly Harmless was just a way to finalize it - I picture him writing it and saying, "I bet they won't want anymore of THIS..."

Now - you may be correct, at least about his transitional state of mind, he was about to turn 40 when he finished MH, and it is not nearly as re-readable as the first 4, but I think it was intentional.

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe was better than the first book, IMO.
