This just started on HBO.

What are the board's thoughts on this little gem?

Jeremy Irons plays a good antagonist.

Renee Zellweger sucks, but she was popular back then for some reason.

I just really enjoy Westerns and we've had some mighty slim pickens the last 25 years.

One of the better unsung westerns out there.

I love this exchange after the shootout:

Everett: That was quick.

Virgil: Everybody could shoot.

Never have seen it. I watched some of the Brando Appaloosa from 1966 a couple of weeks ago.

John Saxon is the bad guy in it.

Just watched for the first time. Ed Harris directed. Renee Zellweger is terrible. Movie was nothing special; won't rewatch. Not sure why it needed an R rating either.

Best part of the movie and you have to listen hard for it. I'm pretty sure it's Ed Harris commenting on modern westerns. That shootout was very well done.

Overall the movie was good but not great.

Mortensen and Harris are both seriously underrated. I enjoy them in almost every movie they are in, yet I feel like I rarely see them anymore.

Viggio's role in Captain Fantastic was one of my favorite performances of last year.

Its good. The gunfights are well shot and I liked most of the dialogue. Virgil Cole (Ed Harris) and Everett Hitch (Vigo Mortensen) make a good team. As mentioned they could have cut out the predictable woman in distress bs as I feel like it was just regurgitated from numerous westerns before it.

I was going to post this exact thread last night but I was too lazy. Easily one of my favorite Westerns. The dialogue makes this movie. Lots of witty dialogue, but they don't try too hard. And his character isn't an overreach. Despite his great lines, he's constantly needing help with words from Everett.

Dean: Up here you're just another cowboy with a gun.

Virgil: You think that's right Everett?

Everett: No matter where you are Virgil, you're NOT just another cowboy with a gun

...Virgil pops Dean in the mouth with his revolver...

Dean: YOU KNOCKED MY TOOTH OUT!

Virgil: Well Colt makes a heavy firearm. That's a fact.

Dean: Mr. Bragg ain't gonna like that you hit me.

Virgil: I don't guess you liked it all that much yourself, Dean.

the scene

I don't think I've ever seen a bad Ed Harris movie. He's done well, but I don't think he ever got the "superstar" status he deserves. And I think this is one of Viggo's best roles aside from the LOTR movies. I think he deserved a better career. He's had a few other good movies, but not exactly a run of blockbusters. And he was the best thing in the LOTR movies.

I caught it last night on HBO. I enjoyed it. I love modern westerns, and I really enjoyed all of the leads in Appaloosa. I didn't think that RZ was that bad. She wasn't supposed to be a likable character, and she wasn't.

Bragg: "I told you you'd never hang me, Cole."

Cole: "Never ain't here yet."

Randall Bragg: Mr. Everett Hitch. You a drinking man, Everett?

Virgil Cole: Not so much.

Randall Bragg: Hard to like a man who doesn't drink a little.

Virgil Cole: But not impossible

Agree all around. Viggo seems to be pretty selective in his roles, as far as substance. But he seems to be excellent in everything he does.

Was really good in Carlito's Way despite being pretty far out of his wheelhouse.

Watched it tonight. Enjoyed the hell out of it. Harris was his usual excellent self, but Viggo was especially strong. History of Violence, Eastern Promises, Captain Fantastic. Quite a career he's got going.

Good film, but that song Renee Zellweger kept playing on the piano was overkill.
