Not opening in my neck of the woods until mid December, but I will check this out as soon as it does.

Give us your general thoughts. How was Affleck?

Just got back. Casey Affleck was superb. He is a better actor than his brother. Michelle Williams also did a nice job with limited screen time.

However, I must say I was a little underwhelmed overall. It was good but not great IMO. I thought the score was pretty bad. It just took me out of the movie multiple times. I'd give it a B.

The score made me feel like I was in an episcopal church, but a good movie overall. Heavy, Affleck was good as well as the kid. Dude is a player for being a ginger.

I saw this today and really liked it. The acting, all of it, and story were superb if not paced oddly. The music as mentioned, while unusual was also interesting.

Excellent movie, but I thought the music was so heavy-handed that it was downright distracting. It just didn't even need to be there at all in several scenes.

Saw it.

It's quiet and meloncholy...And rudderless.

I don't know why the reviews are amazing because regardless of the thin story and pace, the film feels lifeless and aimless like Affleck's character.

I love rich contemplative movies but this isn't it...Not what was advertised.

Probably the best movie I've seen in 2016, but yes the score was "strange" in places. Awesome performances, especially Affleck and Hedges (the nephew).

Not something to put you in the Holiday spirit though.

100% agree.

I like contemplative movies, but I just could not get into this one at all. "Rudderless" is a good adjective to describe it. I love Casey Affleck, but my reaction to it when I walked just felt eerily similar to how much I disliked Moonrise Kingdom when I walked out of that.

Just got out the movie about an hour ago. This about sums up my feelings as well. Great acting, good story, but once the movie ended I was like "meh". The whole movie just felt sorta flat, the movie starts and ends with no real ups and downs in between except for the major flashback scene. It was definitely a sad story, but not what I would call tear jerker.

It's kinda comparable to a movie like Boyhood. Good acting, extremely realistic but nothing ever really happens. It's more of a character study of a few people after a tragic event.

With that said, Affleck was great and worthy of the praise. Good, not great movie. 7.5/10

This is a hard movie to describe for me.

Yes, it is a character study. But hot damn, it's a brilliant character study with brilliant performances. How subdued Casey is able to stay is incredible, and you both hate him and love him for it. The one major scene outside with Casey and Michelle Williams was masterful.

I was worried the slow pacing would bore me to death, but it never dragged for me. For a 2+ hour character study, it kept my attention. You really did feel like you were just watching these peoples lives unfold right in front of you rather than watching from behind a screen. But with that being said, it's not my favorite film of the year and I would have a slight problem with it winning Best Picture like some critics are suggesting. You do keep hoping for a little bit more of a plot, but oh well. It accomplished what it set out to do.

Great film, but no rewatchability.

It was terrible depressing movie.

Spoiler

It kind of just ended with him giving up the kid. Strange.
