Saw it last night. Loved it. Easily my favorite movie of 2016.

I read the short story beforehand.

SPOILER

In a very real way, reading the story and then watching the movie contributed to the overall theme of knowing the end in the midst of the journey and still enjoying the ride.

Fantastic!

Was able to sneak away at lunch for an early showing.

It was actually really quite beautiful.  I knew it was going to be good based on villeneuve's previous work, but I was surprised by the emotional tone, in the best possible way. amy adams was just lovely, and the main theme from johannsson was equally as gorgeous. highly recommend it.

By far the best movie I've seen so far in 2016. Hoping to see moonlight and Manchester by the sea soon though.

This movie does what Interstellar wanted to do, but came up short...and I loved Interstellar so that's not a knock to it.

This film is just absolutely beautiful. I can't think of a better word. It's emotional, intense, and it gave me that sense of awe and wonder that I love about great SF. My wife and I had a long discussion about it after we go out. So much you talk about and interpret!

I loved this movie.

Amy Adams really carried the film with her emotional scenes. A lot of films would have failed miserably trying to pull off what Arrival did, but Arrival hit the perfect tone.

I guess I'm the only one here who hated it. The movie could have easily been 30 minutes shorter without all the fluff they added. It just seemed so pretentious for pretentious' sake and labored on and on, in my opinion.

exactly what fluff are you speaking of?

IMO, every shot/scene is deliberate and there is no fluff.

Also completely disagree. It's a smart sci-fi movie that requires very little to be explained at the end.

Upstream Color(which I love) could be argued to be pretentious. Not Arrival

It's a heptapod. Only 7 legs.

And I'm not sure what you're asking. He said that the heptapods were going to need humanity's help in 3000 years. That's why they brought them their language now...she they'd be prepared to help.

And she didn't say that they had no concept of time. They experience time all at once. Everything that's going to happen in their lives is all happening at the same time for them. They don't experience time linearly.

Saw it last night. I don't get all the love. It's slow and boring with a cool ending. I guess the last 5 minutes of the movie make people leave feeling like it was a good movie. I didn't forget how slow the rest of it was.

wasn't an octopus. It was a heptapod. It had 7 legs, not 8

they were teaching Amy adams their language now so she could teach it to humanity. So, in 3000 years when they would need humanities help, humans could do so and communicate with them

it's not that they don't have any concept of time, they just experience it in non linear fashion. They can see the future, the present, and the past all at the same time

if you mind me asking what you thought the fluff was? Cause I didn't get any of that. To me, every single scene of the movie was very deliberate

Watch it with the explanation and answering questions. Someone will down vote you for unknown reasons.

Second best movie of the year. I'm still very partial to Hell or High Water.

I liked it and thought it was interesting, but that being said I was relatively underwhelmed with it.

Also I feel like it got a little caught up in the issues caused by time travel (or in this case, being to access time in a non-linear fashion). Also, am I the only one who thinks that teaching humanity this alien language that allows them to access time like that is a potentially horrible idea?

Oh yeah...it's not gonna turn out well.

And whike we're on things that bothered us...I just wanna say...you don't salute in the field, dammit. And you don't wear your cover on a flight line, which is basically what that whole area became once they decided to land helicopters there.

for stuff like this, I just mark it up to the director being French Canadian. He doesn't know better

The Revenant was slow, boring, and cold. Sure, it was supposed to feel cold. But it was so cold it was actually depressing. Was is beautifully shot? Sure. But so was the Holocaust.
