Anyone here ever been on Jeopardy?

I've casually watched it on and off for many years, but since Arthur Chu last year, I've started to really study it, with the hope that I might try out one day.
It seems to me that most people don't realize that buzzer skill is probably literally 75% or more of the game. You'll routinely see a list of 10-15 answers where all 3 contestants clearly know the questions, yet one guy will buzz in successfully 85% of the time.
If you were on the show, what do you think your strategy would be in regards to how certain you were of the answer before you buzzed in? I did talk to one past contestant and she told me her policy was only if she was 100% certain that she knew the answer. Her logic was that she is going to know probably 2/3 of all of them, so she would just focus on buzzing in first on those.
I also didn't realize they film and entire week's worth in one day.

A lady I recently interviewed actually won it back in 1997 (lost the next game). She said the buzzers are tricky, they're almost on a delay so you have to get into a rhythm and get the timing down.
She also said they told you to bring multiple changes of clothes becuase like you said, they film multiples in one day. So if you keep winning you have to keep changing outfits

Think how brutal that is. So draining.

Yes, I'm Tyrone in this meme.

Had a family member win an episode. Was there for the filming. Pretty cool. Five episodes in real time - exact commercial breaks etc - unless there is a screw up, which there was for one of our episodes. trebek is pretty cool and talks with the audience during the commercials and answers questions. He puts in some time reading questions the day of the taping so that he doesn't stumble on any during actual game.
The buzzer was definitely a part of it and u have to be steady. No anxiety or jumping at the question just because you know the answer.

Tried out in the 90's for teen Jeopardy. Went through a couple of rounds and got stomped by the kid from the school across town. He ended up going 5 wins in a row.

I should have tried that. I would have got pretty far with those weak arse questions.
Adult jeopardy would crush me.
Don't they have a huge potential question book for contestants to study or am I just making that up.

No, but I met this guy while I was trying out for Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

My mom made me try out for teen Jeopardy in the 90's because I always knew so many answers when we watched on TV. Turns out the test is a lot harder than the questions you see on TV.
Out of the hundreds on our room, only 2 or 3 were asked to stay. The rest of us were just laughing.

A college pal of mine at LSU was on college jeopardy. As i recall he was top score at end of 2nd round, but lost on final jeopardy. He was a business major and the other two were sciences. The question was something along the lines of: highest atomic number element with a single letter abbreviation? Cant remember his answer but it wasnt uranium.

Yeah I've also heard test questions are harder than show questions. I guess you don't want somebody completely embarrassing themselves because they didn't get the right categories.

I kill it at home, but like I said in a thread here about a month ago there is a clear prejudice there against having old people as contestants. My personalbest is 12 correct final jeopardy answers in a row.

You are only allowed to buzz in once Trebek has finished reading the answer. If you buzz in prior you get a brief delay before you can answer, which is why you see contestants sometimes clicking on that thing like mad.

My belief is that there is relative parity of knowledge, but distinct disparities in buzzer skill and betting skill.
Stated differently, if you went on against Ken Jennings with foreknowledge that you knew 95% of the answers, he would likely beat you almost every time. He is a freak with that buzzer.

Would you dress up like the dog on the show?

I made it to the third callback for college Jeopardy! Still have the complimentary pen they gave me. Got passed over for not having enough of a personality at that point (hadn't started drinking or fricking yet). My lab partner freshman year actually sound up making the show and got worked by a chick from Stanford.

Very much so. The spectrum of knowledge you need to have is wide.

Wow! I definitely would not have guessed that they filter for lack of personality.

No, but I was invited to be a guest on the Jerry Springer show in the late 80's. Isn't that almost the same thing?
