These shows are a bit strange. The documentaries seem to be real but some of these guys have got to be actors. A lot of it seems scripted. These people are WAY too enthusiastic.

So last year, they had actors doing bullshite Megaladon specials, pretending to be real. This year they're doing real subjects with what appear to be actors or at least, coached personalities, and definitely some scripted dialog.

I use to love it but it's lost its luster for me over the past few years. Mainly for the reasons you listed. I miss the days of informational documentaries and flying great whites.

That's the one that looks like it's a bunch of actors. The way they did that last bit was way too dramatic.

Discovery has obviously spent a lot of money on fancy equipment this year, though.

Gotta admit that kid has balls of steel. In a plexiglass cage with a door that won't close. And cuts all over his hands.

They've filmed 20 footers in the past, but I think that size comparison was a bit generous. Big fat toad, though.

Trying to put a camera on a mako sounds like a bet someone made when they were drunk

Yeah, I don't think that clunky thing is going to allow it to swim at full speed.

And I think that Mako attacking the camera was cgi.

Agreed - we're not going to see some silly fake drama show this year, but they're most definitely playing up the danger angle.

"Right back through the kill zone..." in a voice that sounds like overly dramatic movie preview guy.

That last shot was definitely cgi.

"right through the KILL ZONE!"

This is ridiculous. It's mostly cgi, and the shots they're getting aren't possible with the equipment and people they have.

They're still bullshitting us. They've just chosen more believable material.

Discovery has lost its mind.

I'm not sure what you were watching, but they are using normal professional gear and no cgi was needed. The shots were pretty normal and nothing new, really.

Don't get me wrong I'm as skeptical as the next guy, but I don't think that mako stuff was CGI. Maybe you guys have better TVs than me.

There was definitely some cgi, not all of it, but several shots of the sharks, as well as the dolphins. Ask yourself how they got that shot if they're all standing on the boat and the shot requires that a cameraman be swimming backwards at 20 mph.

The rest was just overdramatic bullshite. The narrator was ridiculous, the timing of events was way too convenient, the "scientists" were way too enthusiastic and dramatic and you'll never convince me that you could get accurate readings from a device the size of a Christmas turkey clamped to the dorsal fin of a shark.

But, just like last year with the megaladon show, it's being played off as 100% true, complete with appearances by the participants on the "talk show," hosted by the guy who directed Hostel.

Seriously, is Discovery practicing to be the propaganda wing of the government? It's all fun and games when we know mermaids and megaladons don't really exist, but this is getting bizarre.

You mean of the mako? I'm pretty sure they were towing a spinner ring behind the boat with a camera in the middle of it.

The jumping mako was kinda sketchy, but I chalked that up to shitty filming and them having to force what little shot they got.

I did watch the other episode late last night with the guy and the little kid. That one was a little much. IN THE ZONE.

I preferred Shark Week in the early years when the popularity had a twinge of irony to it. It was 100% educational, but the end product was a week of hypnotizing entertainment.

There was a lot of "Swamp People" directing going on in the Mako show. I had to stop watching because it was so clearly staged. When they are yelling that it is going to jump when it was almost nearly at the boat and then they cut to a shark jumping about 100 feet away from the boat, I knew it was BS.

Furthermore, I guarantee that experienced divers do not freak out like that when they see a shark nearby.
