Anybody here have a really large collection of digital media

What is the ideal setup? How many TBs hard drive would it need to be to basically own every movie you ever enjoyed + tv series, music cd, etc

Do they have a dedicated media removable hard drive setup just for this? I remember something called the Keg a while back . Idk if its still around. Drive sizes have gotten huge since then .Tia

I have a 2TB NAS of which I am using about 900MB. I have media players hooked up to the TV and stream from that. Roku seems to be the player of choice here although I have a segate and have no issues with it. Also has Netflix app built into it.

it's not. Surely he meant 900GB

I have an old PC running FreeNAS with 3x2GB hard drives. Stream to WDTV Live, original xbox running XBMC, and PS3.

Ha sorry meant 900GB. The average file size for a movie is between 700MB and 1.25GB. 1 hour shows about 350MB and 30 minute shows about 150MB

~ 8000 songs
~ 30 audiobooks
~ 500 MOBI books
~ 200 burnt DVDs
~ 100 mp4 movies

cloud storage (too expensive) with external hard drive backup along with high capacity jump drives for movement between machines

10 ought to do it. .AVIs and HD movies/shows are much larger files

Know off the top of your head what a decent 10TB setup would run? Roughly of course

$800-$1000

10TB would be tough to fill though

my advice would be to start with 2TB and upgrade later as you near capacity. most likely, by the time you need 10TB, the cost will have dropped significantly.

That is a ton of space. I have about 700 movies and like 18 TV Series. Among stuff like sports clips\games and I am at a 10th of that amount of space. But if the price is right I guess why not. Although I do not have music or books uploaded to it.

Cool. Thx man

Want to set something up soon. I dl a lot of torrents. Many for older movies I've already bought once or twice. I use to have an enormous DVD collection

I have a feeling they're going to find a way to put some sort of encrypted file specific signature one day proving ownership. I'd like to at least have a solid stockpile of the older stuff before that happens. I'd go nuts for a few months dl'ing everything I even remotely liked just to have it if I had a drive that size

he didn't ask how much to store my current collection. he asked about everything i've ever watched/listened to.

i have the same mentality. when i first started dling, i amassed a stack of DVDs about five feet high. the problem is that physical media like DVDs deteriorate over time.

I went digital because of that and because I got tired of trying to figure out what I had. And trying to catalog it all was problematic.

I have my desktop loaded up with drives and a Western Digital TV Media box connected to my TV.

Works well, other than trying to stream straight BluRay rips

Need to figure out a way to shrink those down..

I've got a friend who I wouldn't say has nearly everything you could want, but he has a lot of good stuff and he's halfway through his 2nd TB drive, been at it casually for about 2-3 years.

That and the issue of clutter, and of moving shite from one room to another if you wanted to watch it elsewhere.

I have 2 TB of networked hard drive on my home network, not even close to halfway full but then again I haven't transferred everything we own to it, just the stuff that we download and the movies that the kids watch over and over.

645 movies/TV shows. No clue how many TB that would translate into.
