So, I was behind the times and finally finished the series last night. The entire time I was watching I got the feeling they all died in the crash and that the ensuing series was sort of a purgatory. Apparently this has been shot down by the creators? What did you guys think? What happened? When did they die? I see LOST threads and have chose to stay out of them, so I apologize ahead of time if this has been discussed in detail before.

No, what happened on the Island really happened in real life. They survived the crash. They died when they died in the series, and the people that survived the series died long after everyone else did, especially Ben and Hurley. The sideflashes were purgatory. It was a place that they built together so they could find each other and move on. Christian Shephard pretty much point blank explains it:

quote:

Jack: ...I don't understand. You died.
Christian: Yeah, I did.
Jack: Then how are you here right now?
Christian: How are you here?
Jack:[Pauses] I died too.
Christian: [They hug as Jack becomes wracked with emotion] It's ok, it's ok, son. It's ok.
Jack: I love you, dad.
Christian: I love you too.
Jack: Are you...are you real?
Christian:[Laughs] I sure hope so. I'm real, you're real, everything that happened to you is real. The people in that church, they're real.
Jack: And everyone else, they're all dead too?
Christian: Everyone dies, Jack. Some before you, some long after you.
Jack: Are they all here now?
Christian: Well, there is no NOW here.
Jack: Where are we, dad?
Christian: This is the place that you all made together so that you could find one another. The most important part of your life was the time that you spent with these people. That's why all of you are here. Nobody does it alone, Jack. You needed all of them and they needed you.
Jack: For what?
Christian: To remember and let go.
Jack: Kate. She said we were leaving.
Christian: Not leaving, no. Moving on.
Jack: Where are we going?
Christian: Let's go find out.

I guess it makes a little more sense reading it. I mean I heard that, but I didn't really absorb it guess. The episode was so fast paced and there was so much to take in that I guess I didn't grasp it as well as I should have.

Eh, not really, but that's prolly a good enough description of it.

Also, the finale very clearly explains everything (like you quoted). I don't understand why so many people don't get it (no offense to the OP, just a general comment).

Wait they had polar bears in purgatory?

Now I'm all sorts of confused.

Yes I'm kidding. There's my Lost joke quota of the day.

I'm trying to keep it simple, which is hard with a show like LOST.

I've gotten into quite a few arguments off-line about the fact that LOST sucks because they all died in the crash. It reminds me of that attrocious interview when the interviewer argues with Damon Lindelof (the head writer) that they all died in the crash. LINK

I really wish they could get someone who knows a lot about LOST, someone like me, to interview him for like an hour like George RR Martin can get interviewed and asked complicated questions about his universe. It would be more questions in how they came to certain decisions in the plot, plot threads that were changed, and what original outlines were, not to mention confronting him about actual stupid decisions.

I liked the whole series from start to finish. Like everything, it had its flaws, but I loved it. I'm going to take a break and will more than likely give it a second viewing to capture some of the things I may not have noticed with the first viewing.

I agree with all of this.

A buddy of mine has the whole set on DVD, just need to borrow it sometime and watch.

My wife has the complete set and she talked me into watching it. It was her second time and my first. I put it off for a long time and I really regret doing it now It was more than worth my time.

I'm just saying that when alot of these interviewers interview people involved in cult shows, books, or movies that typically they get someone who knows alot about the material.

Maybe my favorite show of all time. It was the first ever show that my then girlfriend, now wife, started watching together and the only show we refused to dvr and watch at a later time

It was brilliant. F all the haters

Anything I would contribute has already been said. The crash did happen, the island was real, what happened to them was real. They all ended up dying at certain points in time just like anyone else.

I was a big LOST fan but hated the finale. The good thing that came out of it for me is J.J.Abrams didn't screw up the Fringe finale.

I loved the finale. Wasn't a big fan of the whole last season, but the finale was extremely well done

Also, I need to start watching Fringe
