Was listening to a podcast. They're making a movie about a pro rugby player that came out in Wales. It's supposed to be an inspirational story about this specific guy's life. Whatever. Cool.
This week, the studio making the movie said that they're changing the guy's name and nationality because "Americans don't know what welsh is."

That is a little short sighted.
Or it's smart. I mean who would think something like that would work. That's almost as dumb as thinking that a story about an Indian girl playing soccer in England would make any sort of headway in the US.

Yeah, they're changing from Wales to Ireland. The guy it's based on tweeted something like "are you kidding me?"

pretty dumb fricking move IMO
and shite, maybe this could have been the movie that made Wales more widely known in the US.
Instead they were like "deerrrrrp da Mericans might not know there be different types of Brits.... Make him Irish, everyone knows Notre Dame and Rudy!"

Was it the Americans who said that or the British who said that though? I don't know.

I'm starting a GoFundMe to keep the story in line with true life. Go to the GoFundMe website, and search "SaveTheWales"

The British tend to be pompous assholes, so I'll guess the latter.

Hmm...
Then it might be more like "The bloody yanks are so dimwitted that the blasted chavs have a greater understanding of the world. I rather doubt they can tell a sheep shagger from a jockie so let's just make the bloke a bogtrotter and hope for the best."

And the Hollywood producers are changing his name from "Gareth" to "Mick", a part that'll be played by Mickey Rourke, apparently.
That's good. As an American, I get confused when on-screen actors are called by names other than their own.

I've long since suspected that Hollywood is way more afraid of risk than they need to be.
They're too concerned that the American audience won't relate to anything that they're unwilling to try something new.
They should take these opportunities to educate the people, if it's a subject we're not super familiar with.
We don't exactly hate to learn.
I mean, we're talking about Wales, not fricking Burkina Faso.

They aren't even giving us a chance. They seem to just want to stroke their own cynicism, claiming Americans won't understand it and ensuring that we'll never know whether or not that's true by changing it. Again, it's typical British pomposity.
The Englishman Who.... was just about the most Welsh movie ever made, and many Americans enjoyed it all the same.
