(Reuters) - A vast majority of Americans would prefer to assemble their own pay TV channels rather than subscribe to packages that include dozens or hundreds of networks, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll found in a challenge to traditional television distribution.

Seventy-seven percent of U.S. adults said they would like "a la carte pricing" which would allow consumers to pick their own channels. Only 23 percent said they would prefer bundles. (For a graphic see https://reut.rs/1H4mLdK).

Media companies and distributors that provide satellite, broadband and cable services are struggling to find ways to keep viewers from ditching traditional subscriptions and attract a younger generation, which sees less need for a cable subscription and watches on computers and mobile devices.

"I pay for a lot of channels that are not of interest to me," said poll respondent Charles Bourque, 63, who lives in Manchester, New Hampshire.

He does not want the Russian and Spanish networks that he gets as a Comcast subscriber, paying north of $200 a month. He does not speak either language.

Verizon tested the waters for a product offering more customization last month when it rolled out a Custom TV plan with 36 fixed channels and the choice of adding small bundles related to sports, children or news. That was seen as a step toward a la carte.

Twenty-First Century Fox and Comcast's NBC Universal both said the offer violates the terms of their contracts that allow Verizon to carry their programming.

Walt Disney's ESPN took the same stance and launched a lawsuit against Verizon, claiming the distributor breached the terms of their deal.

A Verizon spokeswoman declined to share details on subscriber numbers and the type of users signing up for FiOS Custom TV, which is aimed at millennials and cord cutters. She said that the Reuters/Ipsos poll results validated the rationale for launching Custom TV.

ESPN did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The survey found few willing to pay more than about $10 per channel. The poll found 40 percent would pay up to $10 a month for sports network ESPN, while 46 percent are willing to do the same with news networks such as CNN, MSNBC or Fox News.

The percentage of people who will pay up to $30 a month for either ESPN or news networks was 4 percent and 6 percent, respectively.

A 54 percent majority do not want ESPN, while 47 percent said they do not want cable news networks.

Adam Smith, a 27-year-old who lives in Ludington, Michigan, said he would prefer to choose channels and pay $70 a month or less per month. He pays over $100 a month for his Dish Network subscription.

The online poll was conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Reuters from May 1 through May 6 with a sample of 1,680 Americans age 18 or older. The Reuters/Ipsos poll's accuracy is gauged using a statistical measure called a credibility interval. In this case, the poll results are accurate within plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.

ala carte wont happen

the big networks(nbc, cbs, etc) own way too many channels. Nearly 90% of their channels would end up on the shitter.

forcing us to take on their shite channels is what they want to continue.

Would love to be able to buy channels a la carte... even better if I can pick and choose start dates and only pay for them for a few months when something I really like is airing.

I wouldn't need to pay for ESPN between college football and MLB seasons... I could save almost three months right there.

No need to pay for MTV while The Challenge isn't on... save 6 months out of the year.

if I could customize my channel lineup to FX, AMC, and the ESPN networks plus the local channels I would uncut the cord. I would pay $60 for this.

When I priced comcast out to get the above, it was over $125 a month.

Great for singles but what about families? Ala carte would probably end up costing us more. Sports, movies, and other "guy" channels for Dad. Disney, Nick, and some other channels for the children. Pre-teens and teens have their own set of channels. All the crap-arse reality TV and other bullcrap stations for Mom. Pretty much everything is covered except for the 24 hour news channels, the religion channels, and the Spanish channels.

My "ala carte" bill would probably end up costing me $500 per month. Just leave it the way it is.

I'm not single, I have a wife who loves the crap TV... I'd probably still come out ahead, especially because most of the crap TV channels aren't going to be much per month.

If ESPN does the math and settles on $10, then most channels aren't going to be more than $1-2.

I'm doing al la carte now:

Netflix
Amazon Instant

that's more than enough.

When LSU football starts I may have to change my game plan.

Which is why ESPN and all the other networks will fight against going a la carte.

They cant make anywhere near the money they are currently making in an a la carte system. shite, they more than likely wouldn't even be able to pay off their current contracts to various sports leagues in that system w/that price point let alone make a profit.

they already get about $6 a month from providers.

there is just no way $10 a month can come close to making up for a minimum of 50% of their subscribers suddenly vanishing. (and thats before you even get to the people who would want to only have it for a few months of the year when certain sports are in season)

I think networks like ESPN would fix that by making consumers sign one year renewable contracts. No switching on and off between seasons.

Surveys like this crack me up, of course people say they'd rather have ala carte pricing to bundles, because they HAVE NO IDEA what it would cost ala carte. No one does, since it is not an option yet. They just assume, well i pay whatever $100/month for 100 channels, then it would be a lot less if i only want 10-20 channels. There are economies of scale to bundles, which makes each channel cheaper/chan when you bundle them all and have 3-5 or so bundles for people to choose. If everyone picks there own channels it will cost more for the cable companies so that cost will be passed on.

just because people say in a survery that all they'd pay is $10 doesn't mean that is all they'd pay. Don't forget they still get advertising, they'd come up with a price point the market would pay if need be, but like you i suspect it'd be more than $10.

ETA: they could have tiers as well, say $9.99 for ESPN. Want ESPN2, U, Classic, SECN etc, that will be more.
