Update: Looks like it'll settle into the high 70%'s with over 140 reviews. Good enough for a theater trip, imo. Will try to check out this weekend.

Only 25 reviews but I was expecting much worse. So far...so good?

Scott has effectively created a satisfying hybrid of Alien, Prometheus and even James Cameron's Aliens.

Alien: Covenant indulges in a spectacle that's been missing from summer movies for the past decade or so. It grosses you out and then laughs at you while you puke (not literally).
quote:
Alien: Covenant is cruel and scary - it's a hard R, and the suspense levels are off the charts. The monsters ... are believable and terrifying.

Here is a pretty-looking and aesthetically dazzling picture that dryly remakes the original 1979 classic with all the perfunctory effort of a master being commissioned to trace the lines of a previous work.

Be warned that Alien: Covenant is about 40 percent Alien, 50 percent Prometheus and 10 percent absolutely bonkers.

It can't come close to matching the greatness of the first two films in the series

So familiar, so disposable, and so baselessly self-important that it might just make you lose faith in this franchise altogether.
Not too encouraging; sounds like the Alien version of TFA.

I read a review on CNet this morning that wasn't favorable

Comparisons to Prometheus are truly horrifying

Well, looks like they safely crossed the threshold to get my money.

Quick question about Prometheus. Does this board hate it because of the basically no answers it gives for all the questions it poses? Because that's the reason I dislike it.

I'm not easy to please when it comes to movies/TV shows, and I liked Prometheus. I think people probably had too high expectations (Alien/Aliens) that led them to overlooking a decent thriller with a pretty good atmosphere/planet.

The issues I have with Prometheus are it's pretentious as frick. I don't go into movies with "expectations" other than I don't want movies to shite over their originals. Which Prometheus did.

That was no where near the worst of it though.
There were some excruciatingly bad lines and moments in the movie.
"Father!" ranks right there with "Martha!"
The whole scene with the girl running in a straight line while a skinny, round piece of machinery is rolling right towards her.
The fact that their map "expert" got lost within five minutes of exploring the area plus the fact that everyone in the film made dumb decisions.
That's just off the top of my head. Again, like BvS, Prometheus had an easy path to being successful. It tried to do way too much and failed miserably at all of it.
If Alien: Covenant gets back on track, it should be (hopefully) an easy success.

Gotta love how he and his buddy are scared of disturbing the dead alien but they have no problem playing with the alien worm when they are lost.

bump...anyone plan on checking this out over the weekend?
Posted on 5/17/17 at 9:13 am to Dav
Definitely.
Will probably go catch a matinee showing on Sunday or something. Been looking forward to this one for a while.

I don't know how you read those reviews and not get excited.

I just don't understand it all. i was too young when the originals came out so didn't really watch much of them save the 2nd and 3rd installations.
Love alien movies period, but what exactly was the point? Engineers create life on earth, then were going to destroy it at the end? Who created the alien worm assholes that morphed into bigger alien assholes? Why were the engineers asleep in the chamber instead of out creating more shite?

Not this weekend but will probably hit the 9 PM during the week.
