Netflix original
I'm on the final episode and I can't believe how much I've enjoyed the show

Did you ever read the books? I don't know how well they hold up as an adult, but they were a fantastic read as a kid.

I've never read them but heard good things about it. How was the movie with Jim Carey?

I think it holds up. There are actually a few lines in the show that I remember from the books, somehow. I definitely forgot how much the books are really geared toward kids, but watching it as an adult is still very enjoyable and brings back some memories.
NPH is really great as Olaf, but my favorite parts are Lemony Snicket's monologues.

IMO having read and enjoyed the books makes the show even better.

I absolutely do not get it.
I slogged through the first episode and can't go back to it.

I've seen the first two episodes and liked it somewhat so far. But loved the books as a kid

I loved the show, never read the books but have added them to the list
There will be another season or two right?

Yeah. If you look at the episode titles, they're doing a couple episodes per book if I remember correctly.

The show is following the unique but weird style (humor and tone) that the books have. So that's why some non-book readers may not get it or don't like it.

Yes. They're doing 2 episodes per book so they'll probably have 2 more seasons since there's 13 books.

yeah, I've been calling it a Wes Anderson starter kit for my boys, because the visuals and tone remind me of him so much. And that could explain the love/hate it would get. My kids and I've enjoyed it, my wife, not so much, and she can't stand Anderson, for the most part, either.

I watched the first 5-6 with my fiance and I kept trying to place the style. This nails it on the head.
I really like the show. It's a show that i find myself wanting to devote all of my attention to it when its on.

Not my cup of tea, but it seems incredibly well done.

I really enjoyed it too and I had never read the book or seen the first movie. Very clever and witty writing and thought the actors all did a great job.

It is a weird series because a part of me didn't understand why I loved them growing up and the Netflix series did a good job at grasping what was so interesting about the theme.

quote:I always thought the movie was vastly underrated. Carrey's shtick can grow old really quickly, but Olaf was a perfect character for him, and he nailed it. The kids were outstanding too, especially Emily Browning as Violet - one of the things I noticed about the Netflix version is how much Malina Weisman looks like Browning:
How was the movie with Jim Carey?
The best way to experience the movie is to get the DVD. The deleted scenes and Carrey's costume tests, in character as the various guises Olaf assumes throughout the film, are literally laugh out loud funny.
